Why does it have to be the he was seeking a 15 minutes of fame? Why can't it be that he genuinely didn't think the game was very entertaining?

I've never seen Jim's reviews as seeking controversy, they are just his honest opinion on the games he plays. Sometimes he's in line with the general concensus, others he's the outlier but it should be the same with every reviewer. His show the Jimquisition does focus more on industry failings, the latest scams crafted by the big developpers to squeeze out more money from gamers which I guess you could say is seeking controversy but if you block out the nonsense in his intro, he always presents well constructed argument against/for the subject of the week so it's not mindless attention seeking. |
Ah it's not that I think the content is really just mindless attention seeking, but I think the persona that he would like to put out of himself is someone who would raise questions which need answering, even down to the name of the show suggests an Inquisition, a papal system using Torture to stop heresy within gaming?
Perhaps controvery was the wrong word, but he likes to be on the forefront of telling people the questions he is asking are super important, while... they're often not and just things which are standard practices but if you take them out of context then they can appear to be strange and shocking.
I guess he is a marmite thing? If you like the look into some aspects of the gaming industry that he points a torch at that is cool, some of those things I just find that shinying a torch on them just brings more attention to an issue that really could have just been left well alone. Guess it's clear that the guy isn't for me just.
Edit - Just going to point out that I don't mean... he isn't for me to the point where I would think his site should be or that I would DDoS the guys site, that is idiotic, I meant he is not for me that I wouldn't watch his videos, I'm perfectly happy that he does his thing online, just that it isn't for me! Wanna clear that up since his site is under fire from haters.

Dang, I didn't know Jim Sterling had that much of a reputation to be attacked for not having a positive opinion on a recently popular game. Seems I've been proven wrong. Why can't they just accept that not everyone is going to like it..? Ah well. I read the review and from the sound of it, it sounds like a lesser Starbound. NMS is something I didn't really get hyped for and am still not when I read and watch footage on it. That's probably not going to change either. Ah well, glad others are enjoying it though.

Is not the first time it happen for popular games like this, there always be some of those
if you read he say my expectations was low but i didnt not expect another crafting survival game
really? what he expect to be a Grand theft planets? is a unique crafting survival exploration game with some combat, and shooting elements He miss or don't see, for reassons we already know, the point of the game
anyway definatly the game is not for 5, if Helo games continue to update it and keep it fresh its going to be one of the best indie games

He doesn't miss any of those things, read the review, he talks about how bad the combat is and how subpar the fps mechanics feels. He also describes the crafting and survival and it certainly doesn't sound like something unique at all, instead it sounds just like any other game of the genre.

That's not what happened, though. The problem is that:
1. His was the very first and only review and a negative one. Something that clickbait sites tend to do.
2. He released his review for such a massive game so early while every other reviewer is trying to take their time with the game.
3. His review is used for ammunition against the game and it's actually affecting people's perception of it. It could hurt sales considerably seeing how much reviews/negative opinions hurt a legendary series such as Street Fighter. Reviewers have more power than people care to admit.
It goes without saying that he is entitled to his opinion as is eveyone else who doesn't like him or agree with him and his methods. Taking his site down, though, is going too far and is criminal, as far as I know.

I can respect that, to each his own. It's actually an interesting parallel to be made that Jim Sterling like No Man's Sky is not for everyone. Some like him, others hate him, some people don't care.
I personally like his videos because they call out practices that I hate in the video game industry (pre-order bonuses, micro-transactions in paid games and other shady money grabbing schemes) but I can see how others might not give a damn about those.

Doubt they have much influence these days. Twitch makes their work pretty much useless because it's very easy for people to judge by themselves just by watching a couple of streamers. It's a dying profession and the few who a still clinging to it are fighting for every attention they can get.

I think that's completley false, now with internet critics have more presence than they ever had and they are the key for the success of certain games, specially very good indie games and they also collaborate in the fail of some very high dissapointments. They usually do not mean a lot in the market, but in extreme cases they do and they certainly are not dying, many people read critics reviews, more than ever probably.
