I don't think we'll ever get a leap as big as going from 2d to 3d.

Maybe a jump to 4d graphics where we are seeing frames not yet rendered so they're traveling through time to our screen.
Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

If those frames aren't rendered yet, how are we seeing them?

I think we will but it will come in smaller steps before we get there. |
What do you think that leap will be?

There is currently games which throw out frames built from already rendered and displayed frames spliced into new frame info like in Quantum Break we got frames traveling from the past to be displayed for us, just need more advancements to preload upcoming frames of what might happen, could be like a choose your own adventure book but in video game format.

Call it the Nintendo Monado and I'll buy 2!!
This bit from Sweeney left me speachless: "Had monitor resolutions not increased at the rate they did, says Sweeney, the world of real-time graphics processing might have gone in another direction."
Is he f*cking kidding us? We've been stuck at 1080p for a decade and only now 1440p and 4K monitors are starting (but only that) to gain popularity. And he complains about the fast increase in resolutions? Yeah, sure...
As for what will come next, my guess is better and more realistic light simulation. That will change how games look.
Please excuse my bad English.

People always underestimate lighting. The moment we achieve perfect lighting all that's left is crafting the right materials.
It will definitely be a leap. But the hardware power just isn't there yet much like it was missing in the age of 2d.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
