", lay on my couch facing the completely wrong direction, and still enjoy my game"
A really good point. In a moment of bad judgment during the big 2007 gaming drought I bought flow for the PS3. Where movement is done by SIXAXIS tilt. Its terrible. If you lay back in the couch you cannot move. You always have to hold the controller in a horizontal position. Terrible
"I think if the movement controls on the remote/nunchuck were done well people using them would be a decent match for PC users"
Sorry but no chance in hell. A mouse has a resolution of a couple thousand dpi. Good players have very fast settings where small flicks of the mouse mean huge changes in view direction. With the Wiimote you always have to move the complete Wiimote around and its direction sensor is at best a good guess.
"use the control stick for forward/backward movement (as usual) but also for turning movement"
hmm if tilt control is really good this would be a possibility. But I think this would be rather complicated. You would have two ways of looking around (up/down is as important as left/right in many games). And if you accidentally tilt the nunchuck you sidestep. Strafing is the most important movement during fight. A Mouse simply works perfectly for looking around.
