I think the acessment here is wrong, Pokemon Go has shown that ppl love Pokemon, it is not the AR, its the Pokemon.

Let's get this straighten up right quick. Pokemon Go is big, not for AR, but for Pokemon. The very idea of catching pokemon, finding rare pokemon, having a challenge like defeating gym leaders and just over all catching them all is the reason for the success. If the AR wasn't there and it was just where you can catch pokemon, it would still be a big hit. We've known this since the the 90's that pokemon printed money. Plus, truth be told, AR is a little too flimsey for serious gameplay.

You mean you can play with AR off?. how does that work?. |
Yes!
Theres a button on the top right when you encounter a pokemon.
The background turns to like a grass landscape .
One of the best things about the AR of it are people photoshopping it and sometimes make it into memes.
Pocky Lover Boy!

AR in the wild with a portable = thumbs up.
AR in your house, people's environments are probably too varied, gimme VR (don't have to worry about lighting, range, yadda)
You say this as if AR has anything to do with PoGo's success. A lot of people don't even use the AR feature in the game.
it's all about pokemon, it's all about being free, all about being IOS/Android.
AR is the minor character here, and pokemon go reinforces only one thing for Microsoft... windows phone sucks.
Nope, as a YouTuber that I follow pointed out a few days ago (I won't leave a link because he's Italian and I don't think anybody here can understand him) what Pokémon GO shows is that most of people don't really know about the existence of AR games, he made the example of the RA Cards of the 3DS which (in his opinion) offer a far better AR experience than the catching in Pokémon GO, so if Pokémon GO is successfull it means that Microsoft didn't show off/advertise properly their AR projects...

I don't see how Pokemon's gps and mobile based AR game has much of any bearing on what MS is doing with stuff like the HoloLens. People are giving AR itself too much credit in this whole PoGo craze.
