Zelda + Sandbox elements + Absolute Freedom + Physics = The chaotic crowds running to play the game, so it's not really much of a surprise.

Well what competition did Evolve have? :P

Also, these awards are based on what is shown and played.  At the time, what they saw and played looked pretty dang sweet.  They couldn't have prophetically known that what they played was literally essentially the entire game and that the game would have all kinds of nonsense carved out of it.
