As of the 4th June this year, Bayo has sold 1 million, might want to adjust the OP unless you want to raise the bar even further and say it hasn't sold 5 mil to be successful or something.

http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70956/bayonetta-2/Global/

Also looking at Capcom's hack n' slash titles has Monster Hunter (A form, read, form of hack n' slash) has the latest one selling at 4.1m.

The genre itself is nowhere near as dormant/dead as say the RTS genre is, but I doubt it needs a Sony exclusive to bring it back from where it is, I don't know why it can only be a Sony ip at that since we will have other hack n' slash games in the future that can also turn out decent.

Also as others have already pointed out, GoW isn't primarily defiend as a hack n' slash game.

This Sony IP you're talking about is the biggest hack and slash franchise so yes if any game can do it its God of War.

Monster Hunter is primarily an RPG and not a hack and slash game and Bayonetta 2 is overtracked and hasn't even sold a million.

Even if it had a million sales these days that is not enough to revitalize the interests of publishers in a genre for AAA games.

Love how you people compare a demo to a full game.

Well... Nobody here knows how the final game will truly be like. The trailer does indicate that it will be a much deeper naratively driven game, and Barlog also stated that the gameplay will indeed be different from what we've been used to so far with the franchise:

"I knew I didn’t want to simply reboot the franchise, starting over with a retelling of the origin story. I wanted to reimagine the gameplay, give players a fresh perspective and a new tactile experience while delving deeper into the emotional journey of Kratos to explore the compelling drama that unfolds when an immortal demigod makes a decision to change."

How does that imply that it will not be a hack and slash game?

A lot of people are trying to define what a hack/slash is, but it's simple. A hack and slash game is a game where the combat system and fighting are the central focus. The game doesn't make you take on random tasks during a level (completing a series of small objectives) such as stopping criminals from stealing loot, or disarming bombs (Platinums TMNT), it doesn't focus solving puzzles or exploration (The Legend Of Zelda), and it doesn't focus on intricate storytelling and slow building pacing to introduce worlds, lore, and characters (the new God Of War). It drops you in on heartpounding action and almost forcefully keeping you the through the duration of the game, and good hack/slash games provide a depth of combat system that makes fighting unequally enjoyable throughout. Simply no other game genre will have you WANTING to fight more than the hack and slash (yet again, a good hack and slash game). While most genres people will want to rush past fights to get to the cutscenes, a hack and slash will make you want the cutscenes to end so you can get back to fighting.

So then TLOU, Uncharted are not TPS games because they focus on story instead of shooting even though the gameplay is that of a shooter?

Any genre can have differnt takes on it and games can be said to belong to that genre as long as the gamplay belongs to that genre.

God of War is a puzzle platformer with elements of extreme action. Yes, you get hordes of enemies to dice up but the game is not hack and slash. Dead Rising is hack and slash. So is Hyrule Warriors and Dynasty Warriors.
Days Gone is a World War Z simulation lol.

You're talking about this game? We haven't seen any puzzles or platforming.

Previous God of War games? They focused on action and puzzles, platforming was secondary. Hordes of enemies, combos, huge variety of enemies, variety of weapons, yeah they were clearly hack and slash games.

That's for another topic. If you want o get into that, start another thread. But basically tps isn't a genre.

Hmmmm what is your idea of genres then? Intriguing.

Genres (like every other form of media) in gaming are what games are classified as given a set of defining characteristics.

How does it imply that it will?

Barlog said he is reimagining the gameplay and wants to provide the player with a new tactile experience. I said "nobody knows how the final game will truly be like." That includes you, me, and everyone else in this thread.

I'm saying what are your ideas about the characteristics of individual genres of gaming.

The gamplay looked hack and slash to me, and I don't think they will change the genre itself.

Well, I can say it certainly don't depend on POV. If an action adventure game is first person, it doesn't make it a first person action adventure genre game, it's just action adventure.

As for the gameplay, it looked more like an Arkham game (action/adventure) than a hack and slash game.

Hack n slash is probably not a good name to describe games like gow, bayo and dmc.
I'd say adventure spectacle fighter is a more accurate name.
And yes I'd like to see more games like these.I love em.I hope gow causes a comeback of these types of games.

Even if it had a million sales these days that is not enough to revitalize the interests of publishers in a genre for AAA games.

That Sony IP was desfined as both action adventure and hack n' slash for the first 3 games and their spin-offs afterwards. THe current unreleased game however is not defined as a hack n' slash and is instead defined as "action-adventure", under that single definition it does not mean that it will "revive" another genre that it is not defined as. It's like saying one genre revives another but not reviving it's own first.

If you want to argue now for the enw one being hack n' slash, then we can now argue the same for MH as it;s gameplay features a hack n' slash variety, especially with the latest one having multiple combat styles.

You don't need hundreds of millions of sales to revive a genre completely. As long as people make games for it then the genre will still go on. The RTS genre for example is still going on but we've yet to see a "base-building" C&C style RTS that rocks the world to come out yet.
