Forums - Gaming - The reason PS3 does not have the Japanese game support that PS2 did

Yeah I forgot to mention the point I thought about with DS and PS2 still being the most viable systems still for all the JRPG support and Japanese centric games, then you get the occasional PS2 to Wii port that everyone harps on cause they usually are lack luster (rawr no moar portz) but still those ports only make Wii the more attractive console for new buyers wanting their Japanese games. If they want to continue their support of Sony it should be a PS2 to PS3 port ;)

@Kasz
Yeah I see FF13 being the point where Japan either starts saying hey we can do this! Or OH NOES! RUN AWAY! type thing, its like if FF13 sells systems and can boost those hardware sales to 4 million in Japan then they will have a better hold for other Japanese centric games to take the risk.

Otherwise I see it going to Wii and it might be hard to win those Dev's back over, just like PS2 vs GC, GC was much more sparse on the very Japanese type game unless it was SUDA51

Development cost is a huge issue as well, for all small - medium Japanese developers.

Aside for JRPGs a lot of Japan games have no audience at all outside of Japan, so they have to be cheap to make and profitable at low numbers (50-100K). Put that same game on PS3 and it'd need to clear 100-200K sales at least, which for those games would be very difficult, especially with a low install base.

As for JRPGs themselves, the same applies but with higher sales potential & requirements. As of today, if I was a Japanese developer I'd make games for the DS and PS2 which have the large install base and low development cost, and maybe a PS2 port to Wii - which is getting there but small-mid developer Wii games have sold like total crap so far in Japan.

Until PS3 has at least a 5 m base, I don't think it's worth the risk to pay to make a game on it unless your SE or have a strong proven IP.

I think FFXIII ww launch could turn this around if only by a little.

The PS2 sold 800k in the first two days. The PS3 took over 8 months to reach that same mark. They are in no way selling similarly.

The Wii, DS and PS2 are likely to be the systems to have the least amount of risk which is why their hogging all the support.

The issue with JRPGs is that they are a genre that traditionally has development cycles of 18-24 months (or longer), thus developers try to make sure that they make their game for a console with a big enough userbase to easily turn a profit. It's perfectly normal that there are next to none JRPGs in the first year after the Japanese launch of each system, this isn't just unique to this generation. Just look back at PS2, GC, Xbox or even further.

Now there are only few JRPGs early in a generation, but in return their are boatloads at the end of a generation. Well, for the winning system that is. Late high profile releases like for example Star Ocean (SNES, 1996), Final Fantasy IX (PS1, late 2000) and Final Fantasy XII (PS2, late 2006) are perfectly normal. Besides these top tier games there are tons of smaller JRPGs like Tales of, Shin Megami Tensei etc.

What I am trying to say is that JRPG developers are among the last ones to switch to the next generation and they usually pick the winning system. A common misconception is that the system that gets the most JRPGs wins, in reality the opposite is the case. A system has to be already winning, before it gets the flood of JRPGs.

What are your thoughts on titles such as Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey then?  Obviously the 360 is older than its two competitors but 1~2 years in is not the end of the generation.

Yeah strange subject. Yet when you look at it the 360 already has 6 Jrpg's to PS3's 1. And 360 has another 2 coming this year! What's going on. And more to the point, this proves the Japanese will only buy their own products even though it doesnt have everything they want.

People still trying to convince themselves the PS3 is on the same path to the PS2 need to wake up. I'm sorry. The PS3 will never be the PS2, save your hopes for the PS4.

Wii has cut the third tier gaming out from underneath the PS3 and is now working on second tier gaming while the PS3 has been forced to retreat to the upper first tier. It's like the DS vs the PSP all over again.

Like the PSP, the PS3 had a chance to take the market, but missed it giving the competition deadly momentum.

If i'm not mistaken , isn't the PS3 selling similarly to the performance of the PS2 in terms of hardware in japan ? . I think it would be quite silly to base your support of a console purely on hardware sales it's important that developers are able to predict the future performance of the console aswell and with MGS4 ,Yakuza and Final Fantasy next year it's becoming an increasingly viable format to develop for.

The Wii probably has had a huge influence in poor support for the PS3 , but I don't think that'll deter the developers , if worse comes to worse Sony will have to finance the development of JRPG's mainly by themselves.

but yeah currently , the PS3 is doing sucky I know I wouldn't buy one if I was japaneese , I'd have a Wii.

Yeah right! You know you are on a game site, where people can look such stuff up pretty fast? Please help!
