Forums - Sony - Playstation 4 NEO Launching in 2016, good? Why?

I think it would be a better strategy then MS is doing with Scorpio, wich is well over a year away. Also the bump in performance doesn't have to be so big, just enough to give a proper VR experience and hopefully 60 fps and slightly improved graphics/resolution. Neo isn't going to have any exclusives and neither is Scorpio, so really it will give MS no advantage.

I´m buying Neo to play BF1 how it was meant to be played, as well GT Sports and Horizon.

Last Guardian shouldn't change much. the style of the game isn't about the graphics anyway or fps.

All games released after 1st October have to support Neo as standard.  So all the big hitters later this year.

That's incorrect. All games developed after 1st October must have a Neo mode. There's a difference.

NEO will be announced a month before its release, doing this it won't affect sales that much; on the other hand, big mistake by Microsoft who announced Scorpio 1 year and half before its release, and the already poor selling figures of XBox One could be affected even more !

By the way, if NEO comes out by Oct/Nov 2016, this is another win by Sony.

Do we know the official terms? I can't believe that Sony would allow such big loopholes, otherwise some developers will even get away with no NEO mode in 2022, because the development of the game started before October 2016.

I personally think it wouldnt be that great of an idea, because they would be then releasing two expensive pieces of hardware basically at the same time, and that aims at the same market/persons.People will buy either one of them or none, and the Neo will lose momentum. Not that it would sell anywhere near gangbusters anyway

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

He was very clear on those terms. Sony aren't going to want to annoy devs by forcing them to delay their games in order to fulfil a mandate. Some will patch in a Neo mode but it's not manditary. After October 1st they HAVE to have a Neo mode. It's the simplest solution.

So which games need the Neo mode after October 1st?

  • games where development began before 2016/10/01 but are still in development at 2016/10/01? yes/no
  • games that are feature complete at 2016/10/01 (beta versions) but haven't "gone gold" until then? yes/no
  • games that have "gone gold" before 2016/10/01 but are officially released after 2016/09/30? yes/no
  • games where development starts after 2016/09/30? YES

Which are the exact terms?

Games that are developed from Oct 1st onwards require Neo mode. Sony will want, but not mandate, that devs add Neo mode to their games currently in development, even if their development continues after Oct 1st. And games that are now released may get Neo mode if the devs want to add it.

Yeah you're right. All games released from 1st October 2016 need to have a Neo-mode. So even as a basic, any game that releases from 1st October 2016 onwards will have to play as well as or better than a PS4 but at 1080p on the Neo.

Developers HAVE to include Neo-Mode for games released from October 2016 onwards
Games released prior to this date can patch in a Neo-mode in future if they want.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)
