Can we put 'opinion' or 'theory' or something in this title?

Agreed.

My apologies, I forgot to do this earlier.

I very, very seriously doubt that it won't be Wii U compatible. In fact I wouldn't be shocked if it were also still Wii compatible. The main reason Wii U dropped GC compatibility, is because they didn't want to have the memory card and controller slots still on the machine.

At the VERY least, I think Wii U games will be playable on NX, because the NX will very likely still have some manner of Gamepad type controller set-up.

For the reason's I stated, I simply don't see Nintendo doing this as it really isn't cost effective (the biggest reason why the ps4 is not backwards compatible)

If it doesn't have, better Ninteno to announce τηατ as soon as possible, I finally have the money for the wii u but I'm in a big quandary about buying or not, you can assume why! ;)

And people thought Zelda would calm the NX thread spam, but nope, now we have excessive Zelda threads on top of excessive NX threads!

Anyway, while you can say backwards compatibility is pro consumer, so too is not not including it to have a cheaper console.

From a technical standpoint it seems unlikely, right now everything points to NX having a different architecture, a controller without a screen, and completely different specs, so backward compatibility would be very difficult to do.

On the other hand I think Nintendo really wants to and needs to bring BC:

Firstly to appease the Wii U Owners. Give them the ability to transfer their saves and everything, just like from Wii to Wii U and keep playing the games they bought on a new console without any extra cost.

And secondly to boost their launch lineup: Wii U had some of the best Nintendo games in years, and many people still havent played them. I actually know quite a lot of people that are saying: "Yes that looks awesome, and I'd love to play it, but the Wii U isnt going to be around for much longer anyway, it would be a waste!"
If all Wii U Games are compatible from day 1 it would give the NX a huge boost, after all many of those games, eg. Smash or Xenoblade,  took many long years to develop. Just throwing that away and making new entries for NX would be a waste and take a whole lot of time.

The difficult part is: How can you offer BC for the gamepad if the NX doesnt have one? The best option I can see here is that the Wii U Gamepad will be compatible with NX and Nintendo will start selling Gamepads by themselves for a decent price. Another possiblity would be the integration of the often rumored NX-Handheld. Architecture and the like can easily be solved via emulation (see Xbox One BC), but the Gamepad could pose a major problem.

As a Wii U owner I really hope they to implement some kind of BC, there have been rumors about ports, and I'm NOT looking forward to buying the same games once more!

The new guy.

With the introduction of the NX, we can gaurantee that it will contain x86 architecture (and if it doesn't, it will have near 0 third party support)

I think NX will be ARM based and recieve significantly better 3rd party support than Wii U had.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I am certain that NX will not have classic BC where NX can play Wii U discs, but probably later they will offer some Wii U games through Virtual Console, and definitely we will see some Wii U remastere/ports.

From what I can see, it all depends what processor architecture Nintendo use. They've got a choice between the ancient PowerPC G3 (Wii-U, Wii, GameCube), ARM (most handhelds) or X86 (PS4, Xbone, Xbox).

If the processor chosen is the PowerPC G3 then they'll have backwards compatibility as standard. However the system won't look any much better graphically than the Wii-U as its got a weak FPU and lacks modern features like SIMD.

If they choose an X86 or ARM we can expect a performance boost over the Wii-U at the cost of losing backwards compatibility. It will also make more developers jump on ship because those two processors are the most popular in the industry and support the modern features the G3 does not.

In theory they could emulate the Wii U, but current PC Wii U emulators require hardware that's way beyond anything Nintendo would build into a system.

On topic, by locking out the Wii Virtual Console, on Wii-U they'll probably just lock out the Wii-U virtual console as well. Nintendo are stuck in a mentality where they think they can con gamers into buying the same game 3 or 4 times by breaking compatibility. They even went as far as to lock out online play on Wii and DS ten days before Mario Kart was released on Wii-U (at the time, Wii was outselling Wii-U in some countries).

Considering Wii-U is a total failure, if Nintendo do go for ARM or x86 we can see back compatibility been scrapped completely. This is looking likely as the long delay for NX suggests Nintendo are revising the hardware.

Flash Sentry's #1 Fan (unofficially).

If they're smart, the back library will just be accessed digitally.

I'm pretty sure that people would berate Nintendo for that considering people complained that the WiiU wasn't BC with the fucking Gamecube lol.

I'm not too big on the tech side of things, but wouldn't Nintendo be able to develop a WiiU emulator for the NX even if they don't have the old processors and stuff?
