Forums - Sony - Digital Foundry - Several sources indicate Neo will launch this year

Microsoft is slowly killing the XBox console. On one hand...here's the new upgraded XBox One S that can play 4K blurays and yet, in 18 months time we will release out brand new Scorpio that will blow everything out the water. So why buy an XBox One? Well unless you desperately want a 4K BR player or you want to play XBox games...oh but wait, every single XBox exclusive game will release on PC as well.....

Back on topic, I still think the Neo will be released this calendar year. Although I am unsure if it will include a 4K BR drive, I seriously doubt it to be honest unless they make the cost quite high as I'm sure MS is losing loads of dough with each One S sale. Be prepared for a $349 PS4 Special Edition (otherwise known as Neo) to be released in November and for the original PS4 to be reduced to $249. This will push sales of the PS4 up again.

Both the PS4 and PS4SE will work with PSVR as well, so expect to see bundles for both $699 for PS4SE version and $599 for PS4 version.

By the time Scorpio releases in November 2017, the PS4SE will have been on the market for 12 months and will have replaced the normal PS4 as the Playstation console to own. The original PS4 will sell loads as well due to it's much lower cost. Also, we could see both the PS4 and PS4SE reduce in cost late next year as well, right before the Scorpio launches which would impact sales of the console.

Talking about 4K, I don't see a problem with any Playstation supporting 4K output, but don't think Sony should go to the expense of having a 4K BR drive in a Playstation at the moment unless they want to drive sales of the devices to drive TV sales. 4K mass adoption is years and years away.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

I still couldn't find a 4k disc to buy in Brazil =[

I'm sure there are plenty of people who aren't interested very much in VR at $399, but greatly interested in an upgraded PS4 for $399.  I'm one of them.  I'd rather get the Neo now, especially if it'll upscale all my games to 4K, and wait til the PSVR is $199-$249.

There will always be users like you of course.

But 2 expensive hardware being released near one another will only start to canabalise one another. unless the world really is entirely ready for both neo and VR.

Ether way, I dont think it will happen but if it happens then sure it happens.

I agree that releasing these two so close together would be a problem...if psvr wasn't intended as a niche product to start with. Neo is likely going to be billed as a premium product as well (especially going by Andrew House's comments about it) but the psvr is really only intended to get a foot in the door. Sony itself has issued a guidance of 1.5 to 2 million sales for the psvr by the end of the year, which is really small even compared to something like the Kinect, which was much cheaper but still expensive by accessory standards. The Neo is meant to supplement the OG ps4 and up its sales to 20 million combined this fiscal year, so Neo is going to be the more important product, while psvr will be for those enthusiasts who do have that kind of cash and for people interested in the novelty of the eperience.

Wow if true. A whole year headstart on the Scorpio...

I want to see who will be behind if Microsoft turns around and decides the scorpio is now a new gen... this is a dangerous game to play. But, i have hope that consumers will give an appropriate response to these products.

I think the earliest the Neo will launch is in 2017. March 2017 to be exact. And i expect the PS4 to drop to $300 with a game or two this year. $300 PS4 and PSVr will be sony hardware pish this year. But around Febuary next year sony will announcr the Neo and releade it a month later. Here's why i think it will play oit like this.

Right now, the neo and PSVr are being sold to the same people. People like me that bought My PS4 at $400 and are excited for VR are the same people that will buy a PSVr for $400. Now if sony makes the neo and PSVr available at the same time, People like me will have to choose one, and in that case i would choose the Neo first cause i know that PSVr will be better with it and wait for about 3-6 months before i buy PSVr.

Lastly, its just bad business sende to release so many nee things at the same time. PSVr will no doubt have its heavy holiday marketing. So will PS4 "now starting at $299". Those two things alome are enougj to drive sales. Wait, when the storm settles then announce and release your new product and have that drive sales again. You do all that at once, and you will no doubt cannibalize sales of each product.

They can decide whatever they want, a new generation doesn't start until Sony says so.

Hasn't Sony already confirmed that Every game released after Oct 1st Needs to Support Neo? So of course it will launch this year. That date wasn't chosen just for the lulz.

I personally don't care though. Not gonna buy, Waiting for NX. =P

The only thing "Sony" actually confirmed was that the Neo exists. What you're doing is reading the rumors from Giant Bomb in April and passing if off as actual statements from Sony.

Tell that to the 360.
