Forums - Gaming - When is "change" too much change?

I think you can say that there is too much change, when you can no longer feel that this is a God Of War/RE/Zelda/Tomb Raider and so on game, when the elements, the most basic ones, that made the original into what it is is no longer there.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Change is good for the most part. Except when you take a winning formula, destroy it and copy your competition. There was no need for this Capcom... Just give me some guns so I can at least pretend I'm playing a Gun survivor game...

Too much change would be changing Link from male to female.

Change is fine, if you've done what you can in the space you created first. If you think of game series like a page from a coloring book, some series feel like they barely colored half the picture (Order 1886), while others not only completely filled it in, they continued to embellish with extra frills that nobody asked for (God of War Ascension). Mainline Resident Evil is actually due for a change - RE1-3 are classic survival horror, 4-6 are action horror, now 7 (-10?) appear to be modern survival horror.

Resident Evil 7 is exactly what the fanbase asked for

Poor Wright

OT: When it's a completely different game just trying to ride on the name of the original franchise. If people want to change things up that much, that's what new IPs are for. No need to screw over existing franchises when you could just make a new one.

Agreed.  Most egregious that I recall for one of my favorite franchises was Shining Force.  Saw Shining Force Neo in the store one day, believe it was on PS2, and was shocked and so excited.  Then saw it was an action-rpg... wtf.

I'm not entirely sure Resident Evil will be like that come the main game. I mean, it's nice for the demo but like PT and it's demo, the game that was to be released was a traditionally 3rd person game. Resident Evil 7 may be a traditional 3rd person game but the demo is more of a setup / advert for the game, right?

Capcom said the whole game was going to be in 1st person, if I'm not mistaken.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Ah, okay. Nevermind then, bring it on.

Although such a change might leave those who wanted and action zombie survival dissapointed.

Hmm, pie.

There are things like spin offs so if a game diverges too much from the original, they could just do that..
