Overwatch Review

Originality: This game combines things from Team Fortress, Pixar, and League of Legends (pushing certain points to get checkpoints feels a lot like killing lane towers in LoL and your skills with your big Q skill as an alt, amongst other things). It is truly a wonderful blend of things, but still is clearly more or less an attempt to perfect what has already been done in the past. I give them props, though, because this game truly impresses, but it isn’t very original.

Graphics: Graphics on this game are about as good as it gets for this type of art style. I have no issues with it!

Art Style: I spent years, if not close to a decade, complaining about how terrible World of Warcraft’s graphics are. Still mind blown that the same company (different people, no doubt) that made WoW made this beauty. What an amazing idea for art style. TF was way too chunky and unproportioned looking, but this game looks like it was a Pixar team that made it, and that is high praise.

Story: Ok all here we go. If your reading this, you’ve probably read some of my past 50+ reviews that I’ve posted on this sight, and you know how much I care about story. Lately, for games that literally have no story (not even an attempt), I haven’t penalized them. This game, since it is clearly just multiplayer with no single player, falls into that category. So breath a little, I’m not going to roast this game’s score like I’ve done so many others that did actually attempt it. However, I did come close as this game has a lot of backstory type stuff (look around the maps, watch the trailer, and read the digital comic things that come out occasionally to find those), but not enough to justify me reviewing it. That being said, I find these characters INCREDIBLY interesting. I mean, the voice acting behind them, the art style, and the plot scenario all seem fascinating to me. I SO would pay dlc money if they decided to create a single player campaign for each character (since there are many characters, maybe only a few missions per one to get their perspective?). I mean, look at Splatoon, a game that is artistically, graphically, and even plot wise very similar (dystopian future). The difference? Splatoon actually has a campaign mode and a decent story. I won’t penalize Overwatch, but I would be delighted if they release a story mode as these characters are amazing.

Game Interface: Annoying or not? No complaints here. I really like how you can communicate so easily hitting the c key and dragging the mouse while still holding the gun in the pc version. Very useful and creative communication method!

Controls easy and fluid or difficult and rigid? I did this on PC and I found the controls to be wonderful, except for the v button for melee (I could never hit it correctly lol), but I know I can change the key bindings so that is my own fault lol.

Is it fun? This game is an absolute blast. I fully endorse it as an incredibly enjoyable game. I was on a full Bastion team (for the lulz) one time and we actually ended up winning the game (the other team wasn’t too happy with us lol). It’s fun to goof off like you do in Mario Kart.

* Means it was more fun than the score indicates. Scores judge the overall quality of the game (how fun it is only counts for 15% in my reviews)

NR means Not Recommended based on inappropriateness.

^Charm is rewarded to games that have an undefinable quality to them that makes them amazing and have high replayability value.

S means a game was not reviewed based on its story quality, more than likely because it had no story mode.

I feel like an adjusted score should have a caveat in your list at the very list. If I were to come back in two reviews and say "how did Overwatch get a 95, it had no story!" your response would probably have to be "I didn't count it," and then I'd have to question how it got a 95 when 30 of your points are then impossible to achieve.

The current metric with story rated so importantly isn't at this point conducive to a MP only game, at least to me. That's my only issue with the review though; if there was a footnote about that sort of score then it'd be fine.

Well actually, now that I think about it, how did Mario Maker get an 88 when that game has no story either? Unless story is a bit of a misnomer as you use it, that game could only feasibly obtain an 85 maximum by your current metric.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Good point! I put * for games that are more fun than the score indicates and I give charm factor too, so it makes since to include some symbol that story was not counted (I'll do an S by it). Mario Maker, I believe, was the first game I reviewed that I didn't hurt it based on story since it had none and it was a level builder.

Okay, if the story wasn't weighed at all into MM then that's fine. At first glance that one in particular threw me off lol.
