Blizzard Clamps Down On Overwatch Porn And Don't Ask Why

Overwatch, the multiplayer shooter that is looking like the next big hit for Blizzard, suffered from a bit of controversy earlier in the year. Some gamers claimed that some of the title's female characters, most notably Tracer with a winning pose that accentuated her backside, were overly sexualized.

As probably expected by some, Overwatch slowly made its way into porn, hatching a new genre of erotic content focused on the game's characters. Blizzard, however, is not having any of it.

Redditor spornm posted on the online forum an image of a message that he had received from porn website Pornhub regarding a video that he uploaded featuring Overwatch's Tracer and Widowmaker and Mass Effect's Liara.

The message states that the video has been removed due to the material being an infringement of copyright.

"It's the same as Blizzard taking down that tracer art work you drew in class. Its them pick and choosing which content they want people to see," spornm wrote on his Reddit post, calling for Blizzard to allow the content to be distributed and for the company to stop policing the Internet.

Spornm is not the only uploader of Overwatch porn that has been served the takedown notice, as several other creators also received similar messages. The claims are coming from a company named Irdeto, which is speculated to be hired by Blizzard to scour through the Internet for Overwatch porn and have them removed.

While Blizzard has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the matter, the main issue is probably the fact that the Overwatch porn is being created through Valve's Source Filmmaker kit. As such, the creators of the content are essentially stealing Overwatch character models to create the porn scenes, which when taken as is couldmake good grounds for Blizzard to hand out copyright infringement claims.

While porn for Overwatch could be considered free marketing, it is unlikely the kind of activity that Blizzard wants its new gem to be associated with, especially as the game has just recently launched.

I don't blame them lol.

So using ingame assets to do all kinds of mods is okay, but doing porn is not? I see all kinds of in-game engines being used from Mass Effect, Silent Hill, Dead or Alive or Resident Evil in Porn clips and gifs.
But this is the first time i see a company cracking down on this fan art, wow not even Konami did this, shame on you blizz

Trying to clamp down on PORN!?... On the internet!? Good luck. xD

If the model is not pulled straight from the game and is actualy an original model there is no copyght infingiment. Blizzard is trying to intimidate ppl because even tough they are not infriging any copyrights the whole legal shenaningas is expensive and time consuming and the creators tend to just not try to dispute the clains for that reason.

It's very simple. Mods = good publicity! Porn = bad publicity!

Publishers like: good publicity!

Publishers don't like: bad publicity!

I don't think you can really moan about Blizzard in this case. They have every right to do this and it's not at all surprising.

If you've seen porn of other games, firstly it may not have been in game assets anyway, but even if it was how can companies shut it down if they don't know about it? Overwatch porn is actually popular so it's not exactly hard for Blizzard to notice it.

There's porn of every game.... ever... and all the modern 3d games made using game assets. Tf2, tomb raider, lollipop chainsaw, Batman Arkham, mass effect. And there is a hell of a lot of it. All companies know it exists. The bioshock infinite guy even said how much he hated the porn of Elizabeth lol.

I really don't see the point in what blizzard is doing, you can get it taken off pornhub sure but you won't get it taken off the thousands of other sites, you just type in "Overwatch rule34" and bam you're done. There's nothing anyone can do about it so what's the point.

As far as I know they've only shut down ones that are using models pulled straight from the game.

Then they are 100% in theire rights to do it cause thats a gigantic copyright infringiment.

Well, on one hand, I can understand them trying to reduce the Overwatch porn. You don't want the first google search to be something NSFW, tink of the parents buying this to their children because CoD is too violent. On the other hand, good luck trying to stop porn. Is one of the elemental forces of the universe, alongside electromagnetism and gravity.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

PR.

This will make headlines. Leaving it there won't. Furthermore, this will cause beneficial headlines. Imagine a parent contemplating on what to buy for their kid as a birthday gift or whatever, and they read that Blizzard are shutting down people trying to make porn with stuff from their game. They'll go "those are responsible people", and they'll have Overwatch at the back of their head, which could easily influence their decision if their kid is into video games.
