Forums - Microsoft - Kotaku:The Windows Store is a giant disaster. 98% of PC sales of RotTR were from Steam

Is anybody really surprised by that?

You don't beat Steams dominance of the PC market overnight, and certainly not with a storefront that everybody seems to hate...

I don't think anyone ever will, not unless they do what Valve has been doing for years on end to get to where they are. I honestly don't believe MS will ever dominate PC gaming as a whole while taking away options that Valve and others have given out for years, one of them is modding and MS definitely doesn't have that in their plans or future at all and it's one of the reasons why they won't be completely dominant.

For them to egt to a respectable point, they will have to allow for mod support, stop treating all games like mere apps that are locked away, go with Steam like sales and have them throughout the year like Steam and GoG do, don't price gouge on day 1 for late or butchered console ports. All of those listed aren't really the options MS wants going for them, they'd rather have it all done easy as pie with hardly any questions asked while also asking for people to have less on their plate than what they get with other stores and clients. Also making sure any game works on a brand new OS is an absolute must for MS to get on with and they aren'tr eally doing a great job on in that dept either.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Putting something on the windows store makes no sense when it is also on steam.

Steam has a much larger reach, is cheaper, mods etc etc.

Even if they slapped their games to being only on their store will they still not reach enough people, the whole Windows 10, windows 10 store gig is leaving out so many millions more would be customers out there including myself. They are better off supporting 7-10 with game releases and allowing the games to be on both Steam and their store, at least then they would be pleasing a number of crowds and angles while also getting enough money in return, limiting themselves to just one OS and a single botched store that still offers and works less than the competition isn't going to work out for them, even in the long run.

And not a soul was surprised, this is 100% deserved, the PC community is seething after MS promised they'd be "focusing on PC again" a couple of years back. If this is them focusing on PC; I'd rather they didn't and leave it to those who have a clue how to do things right and without forcing things on consumers.

I rememebr reading this thread on Gaf a few years back. It details the list and documented promises MS has made to PC gamers over the years and as you can see, hardly any of them have worked out if at all: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=88868188&postcount=177

THis just shwos that MS doesn't really see PC gaming as something to allow roaming freely, they would rather control it and keep it in a box (hence the whole GFWL and the fact that they never once said they would completely do away with the system and Win 10/store is the result).

When I first heard of 10 I was positive that maybe for once things would finally start to turn out right, but then the free update turned out to be finnicky and attaching itself to your mobo when the free update expires which meant your previous 7-8 key would be rendered worthless and the current OS being chained to a single mobo which meant less options to upgrade your rig let alone a new one without having to call up the hotline in India and rabble on for a new key or paying £100 for a new one, those to me are the same old shit options that haven't really changed and it shows that MS hasn't either.

The only way minds like that truly work is when they are near the brink of death and show the will to survive, right now I don't think they give a rats ass about the state they are in because they certainly haven't spun around the wheel since their promise back in 2013 to PC gaming let alone the myriad of promises from well over a decade ago.

Not really surprising that especially such a game does sell much better on Steam. Right now the store is more for these small games for people who aren't big gamers and the game (also other games) had big problems which wasn't the case on Steam.

Not to forget that only Windows 10 users can but it from the Windows 10 store. Right now 40% of Steam users have Windows 10 which means 60% can't even buy it on the Windows Store.

Maybe these kind of games will reach 10% on Windows Store in a year if the market place will get better and with a bigger Windows 10 userbase. It will probably never reach something like a 50:50 situation against Steam. Maybe 25:75 if they won't already close the store in a few years because they expect to dominate or something.

But I doubt that XBO was supposed to sell 2x as much like also mentioned (with 2x as many Xboxes). That would mean it would have sold like the PS4 and the PS4 is already above most expectations celebrated as huge success and nobody expected XBO to sell exactly like PS4. XBO supposed to be at 40m already? Common...

Exactly, and that's why it's such a mystery when MS launch all these half assed products, services and platforms.

I'm completely baffled as to how many potentially great products that seems to be crippled out of the gate or slowly destroyed by time. You'd think that a company with the size and wealth as Microsoft would be able to attract the needed talent to be able to secure high quality and best in its class products (at least at launch).

But that's often not the case and I fail to understand how that's possible.

Windows 10 Store

Xbox One

Windows Phone

Windows 8

Bing

Surface tablets

Lumia phones

Kin phones

Zune media players

Internet Explorer

other (such as Microsoft Vine, Microsoft WebTV, www.so.cl, etc.)

How are these 3 a failure?

No, you're completely right. Those 3 are not failures. Though my point isn't to shout "failure". My point is to uncover how it's possible that MS seems to cripple their own potentially great products (often from the get go).

Xbox One: Numerous PR nightmares (deal with it, buy a 360, always online, mandatory Kinect, blocking of used games, TV-TV-TV, more expensive and weaker, etc.) that crippled the launch of an otherwise good product. Reports have revealed that Xbox together with Skype and Windows Phone loses $2 billion a year. Link.

Bing: Starts promising but fails to steal significant market share and is slowly just destroyed by its lack of continuously improvements and now makes up a $1.3 billion loss together with MSN and Hotmail/Outlook.

Surface tablets: Again, a product with great potential but crippled out of the gate. The Surface Pro is far too expensive and desktop-ish for the iPad audience and the Surface RT is supported by far too few apps

Exactly those 3 products are the ones investors seem the most eager to get rid of. Link.

As said, I'm not trying to be a jerk. If you disagree please let me know. Maybe I'll learn something :)

win10 is a thing and it's new and you don't overthrow the establishment overnight (ussually).

the question is does MS have the determination to stick with it for the long haul? MS has a long history of abandoning ship if something isn't working out pretty much right away.

That's not true, look at how hard they tried with

- Zune

- Internet Explorer

- MSN Messenger

- cell phones

- Bing

(:

Zune had a solid run, was replaced by smart phones.

Internet explorer being replaced is more marketing. Its still in Windows 10.

Messenger was replaced by Skype (MS product).

Phones are still around and have been for a long time.

Bing is doing better then it gets credit for.

No major company has a perfect record. How is Steam OS doing?

Not that surprising RotTR has abysmal numbers on the Windows Store. But its not a reflection of how exclusives do in Windows Store.

Aren't exclusives well exclusive just to their store?, comparing exclusives to nothing else doesn't really tell us how great they are doing.

This is why i avoid MS like the plague, as much as possible. I wish Google would just do their own OS.

They did, it's called Chrome OS. Bit useless for games though.

I never knew they had their own OS. I have Chrome, just didn't know there was an OS. Is it worth getting, if you don't use your PC at all for gaming?

In a nutshell, Chrome OS is shit compared to Windows and its app support sucks. But its fine for basic stuff like web browsing, streaming, etc.
