OK, how you you recognize quality in a video game? What are the objective indicators of greatness?

Quality isn't the same as greatness. I can recognise the quality of a singers voice but dislike they're music. It's about being 'really' objective, not the silly so called objectiveness I see people throwing around on a daily basis. You have to fully comprehend and embrace what objectivity really is and that takes years of questioning yourself.

OK let's remove "greatness" from the equation. Explain to me how and when you notice quality in a video game, and how that objective quality is different from your personal, subjective set of preferences.

Because the games have higher scores? That's not the point.
TLOU just didn't had any kind of point to be called into, that actually exceeds highly on every aspect, and defines a new standard for a whole concept on the media.

I fear we'll never see a game achieve anything close to what TLOU did, it doesn't mean games won't evolve past it, but that there was just nothing, absolutely nothing, to be taken away from it (on top of having several things to be admired), and as deserving to be considered perfect as it does.

The AI is terrible. There you have something.

Yes stealth AI can be underwhelming. Ellie sometimes runs right in front of enemies and cant be detected but rarely does it happen. When you in stealth and enemies havent detected you, ellie stays behind you and in cover for most part.  Battle AI is extremely good so overall AI is good to very good with all included.

You can't be serious? Who is to dictate quality? Just because you say a product is of quality, doesn't mean others will agree.  It has to do with ones opinion, plain and simple. When you say something is of good quality, you are just giving your opinion.

I can see the quality in things I dislike. I HATE fps but I can recognise the quality of the product.

Quality doesn't mean the product is perfect, vice versa. Of course you can find good things in bad products but then again, what you just said is your opinion. Just because you found something good in a bad product, doesn't mean others will agree.

I apply the same rules to everything in life. You're asking me to explain a lifetimes worth of soul searching and reduce it to specific points. It doesn't work like that. You just know what is good and what is bad regardless of whether you personal like it. I could mention graphics, framerate, context, animations to be specific but that is a vastly simplistic interpretation of what I mean. I can see why people like something without liking it myself.

Here is a question: What is better, an apple or a rotten apple?

Gribble, that's not an answer. I said each of us defines "quality" based on our preferences, priorities, and personal experiences. You said I was wrong. Explain why I'm wrong.

You seem to think The Last of Us is a "quality" game, objectively speaking. Why is that? And what makes your analysis of that game objective and not subjective?

I don't want to belabor the subject, but if you're going to challenge me I expect you to back that up with more than "a lifetime's worth of soul searching."

It's impossible to explain without taking you on at least a short journey of thought processes. I added a question to my last post:

What is best, an apple or a rotten apple. Be objective.

This. I thought it was better than Uncharted 2 and had a better MP.

This is the first time I see you saying something nice about a game, so you also like some things

As for the part about AI, when applied to OoT, I said that in jest. But my point stands that you do not apply the same scrutiny and criticism to games that aren't made by Nintendo or exclusive to their consoles. That much, we all know. ^_-

I name a well known flaw that most people has already accepted of a game you like and you get all crazy like a kid trying to downgrade my opinion because i like Nintendo, what the hell does that has to do with the fact that tlou has a dissapointing AI that can break the inmersion too many times? Didn't say it make it a bad game, but I was answering a comment that pretty much said there was not a single reason to give this game less than a 100 and that's simply not true, I just named the most obvious and accepted flaw as an exemple.  By the way my favourite games of the last gen are Portal 2, Mario Galaxy and Bioshock, two out of my 3 favourite games of the last gen were NOT made by Nintendo or released on any of their consoles, enough with that bullshit already, trying to discredit my opinion because I have a favourite company is completely out of place and ridiculous.

Uncharted 3 sales numbers do the talking. 7 million copies sold is indisputable proof that UC3 is a great game. Game sales are more important than game scores. There have been higher reviewed games that have barely sold 1 million. Millions of people buying the game is far more important than middle aged Peter Pan game reviewers opinions of games.
