I think it's also very compareable to pretty much any "shooting sport".
Alot of Esports take more Precision than Darts, is stricker on timeing that curling is, and requires alot more thinking than Chess.
Seriously stuff like Mobas (league of legends) are so complex and requireing I think they should count as sports.
Counterstrike and the like are abit more iffy to me, but they still require good precision, and if you can count darts as one, why not CS too.
Yell, shout, f-bomb & millions of clicks per second, that's a true sport for you.

What's the point? They're all competitions and they all require different skills. Enjoy them for what they are. |
It's important because public policy, funding, tax exemptions, sponsorship, scholarships and a whole lot of other considerations hinge on labels and definitions for things. For e-sports to be recognised by national and international bodies as a sport could open up a lot of opportunities for e-sports. Sometimes being considered to be part of the "mainstream" has a lot of benefits.

Definitely a sport. Esport pro players have physical and cognitive abilities that most of us could only dream of. They train hard every day and it's a strain on their body and mind. To call it not a sport is devaluing all their effort and superior physical and mental abilities.
It's like saying football players only walk around and tap a ball with their feet or 100m sprinters only run a straight line for a few seconds. Yes, we all can do that, but never on a professional level because we do not possess their physical abilities or their determination. Same goes for esport.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
if esports were an actial sport then anybody playing video games would be playing sports as well. so no, its not a sport, its the very opposite. you sit on your ass just looking at a screen.

From my experience with some friends who are heavily into that scene? Nope. Sport is about physical activity and being competitive on a physical level to me. eSports is just people sitting in front of a computer screen and talking into a headset. Being fit won't help you win an eSports game. (Same goes for chess, but I don't know why people consider chess to be a real sport either, even though I love playing it.)
In my opinion a Sport is any game played competitively against others for money, so yes it's a Sport.
But Chess and Poker etc are listed under "mind sports" on Wikipedia, there definitely needs to be a distinction in terms between Athletic Sports and Non-Athletic Sports, so while I think they are a sport they shouldn't be classified in the same category for obvious reasons.
