Forums - Gaming - Is anybody scared to purchase Nintendo games digitally from fear of not being able to play on future consoles

You should be worried about the shutting down the WiiU eshop, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you can't download digital purchases onto the Wii anymore??? Quite disgusting really...

Around the Network

I've never bought anything digital from Nintendo, because they don't have a proper account system. And I won't buy a single thing till they make one on par with PSN and Live.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

No different than any other console manufacturer.

Animal Crossing NH Dream Address: DA-1078-9916-3261

I'm scared about it on all consoles because backwards compatibility is not guaranteed, unlike on PC. Console companies don't seem too eager to provide backwards compatibility, especially with the current re-release and remaster trend where they can sell the same game several times. On PC, backwards compatibility seems certain to the foreseeable future because hardware architectures aren't changing constantly and the operating systems too keep the backwards compatibility.

That's why I am not buying retail games for any console as a digital download. (1). The will probably not work on the next console and (2). who knows how long I can download it on the older one. (3.). Also Nintendo is kinda behind all the others and ties the games to the console instead of the account.

I would like to have a system like the PC where I can still play most games until today which where bought more than a decade ago.

(1). DSi to 3DS and Wii to Wii U transfers just fine so why suspect newer consoles won't?

(2). I can still download games on the Wii from 2006.

(3). Nintendo has a new cross platform account system.

(1). So far, it worked because on the WII U the WII OS is being emulated. Lost Winds on the other hand couldn't be ported to the WII U and is lost forever.  Emulating the WII U hardware will be more difficult to do, so I don't believe the NX will have backwards compatibility and you won't be able to move your games to the new console. But, this is still speculation so far. We only had 2 Generations were it was possible to move on.

(2). That's good. But for how long will it be the case?

(3). Which we know nothing about.
