Forums - Sony - The terrible Vita memory cards ( not about the cost )

On mobile phones you have to, at least, ask the OS to safely remove them, so even then you couldn't just remove it suddenly. Anyway, restarting the Vita isn't a problem because it really does it way faster than mobile phones. Of course, it will re-scan the card, but smartphones also do it. You really don't have alternatives for that.

You don't have to on a smartphone. With my last two phones,  I've removed my SD card without alerting the OS plenty of times, and I haven't suffered any loss of data. Been using the same cards since 2014.

I gave my Vita and a ton of games plus a ton of digital ps1, PSP, and Vita games away earlier this month. Great hardware but I never ever use it. I have a PSTV so I can play at least some of the games, still.

Never really had a problem with the cards. The only issue was that I had two and whether I swapped cards, everything I organized went all over the place. And there was this one time (I made a thread about it) that my daughter didn't know my password so it gave her the option of resetting everything to default. THAT really pissed me off!

*Edit* giving my Wii and a ton of Wii/Gamecube games away today, too. Not all, but most of them. It's time. My 3DS consoles are probably next...

I have thought about the 64gb card for sure. As it is, I have 4 32gb cards and 1 4gb, so I'd need a couple.. All are full, but 1 32gb card, which I plan to use mostly for ps+, and limited purchases. I might still get one 64gb though. As for deleting games, I tend to avoid it for as long as possible, but should do some cleaning up.

This is true. I just have to be as careful as possible. It doesn't happen too often. 4 times over 5 years. Like I say, it's the sleep mode that kills me. Sleep mode has no cues to indicate the Vita is still on, unless you happen to get a message and the PS button flashes blue. I don't remove it when the device has the screen running and is obviously on.

Why don't you just turn off the vita? Or perhaps do something yourself to remember whether it's on sleep mode or not

I am now, for the 4th time, having to re-download a full 32 gb worth of games, because I accidentally removed a card while the Vita was in sleep mode. I am pretty upset, and worrying about the continuing functionality of the card itself. I have read that in addition to totally f***ing your software, it could permanently ruin the card. I realize there are not too many Vita users here, but does anybody else think this is a stupid, stupid, design choice by Sony? Frankly, if I wasn't so heavily invested in the Vita, I would sell it right now, because I don't suffer stupidity gladly. Have 5 memory cards, so switching happens frequently. I feel it's only a matter of time until it happens again. At LEAST if it was ok in sleep mode, I would be ok. That's the problem. I assume it's off when it's not. There should be some safegaurd to prevent this, or even better, it should be hot-swappable. I know of no technical reason it should't be. At least this time I ALSO didn't insert a different card in sleep mode, and ruin 2 at once. Sigh. Sorry so aggro. Like I say, pissed off. And I have this shit backed up BTW, but have no idea which file on my pc is for which card, hence having to re-DL.

  • yes, it is annoying. hot-swapping for PSP memory sticks (while not loading, saving or formatting) was allowed, they should have kept it that simple
  • always assume that the Vita is in sleep mode and not turned off. Who boots down his Vita when the sleep mode is such comfortable?
  • instead of (or additionally to) backing up the whole Vita system on PC, back up the separate games instead. It is much more flexible this way to change the current game library on that card
  • do yourself a favor and sell your 5 tiny cards and buy one or two 64 GB cards instead... much less swapping
  • do you really need more than 64 GB of games with you all the time? back up the games you probably don't play this month on PC, you can reinstall them within minutes (you don't lose the save games)
  • alternatively buy a second Vita for memory card #2 and forget about swapping cards. You can use one Vita while charging the other, so you have always a fully charged Vita ;)

Thank you for the advice. I did not know I could save individual games. That's great ,and I feel stupid for not realizing I could do it. I will keep my 4 32's and tiny 4gb though.I need the space. I actually do have a second vita, but I hate to use it because the buttons are squeaky. Like really squeaky. It's never really been used because it came that way, and it didn't open it for until over a year after purchase, effectivly sticking me with a lemon. I do have it though! :) I am buying a blue lcd Vita in the next day or so though. It will be awesome to have 2 of them ready to go. I use it more than the PS4 by probably a 4-1 ratio.

The Vita has an awesome, low power sleep mode, so it's pretty organic to just let it go to sleep and not have a second thought about it. I do tend to power it off fairly often however. As for trying to remember to check on it somehow: That is the crux, isn't it? I do have a method. Simply tapping the power button quickly tells me if it's in sleep mode on not. I just miss that one step on occasion.

When I got my Vita four years ago, I actually stockpiled a few memory cards expecting to deal with problems I heard other people mention, like running out of space frequently, but I ended up using just one 8GB memory card. This admittedly won't work for everyone (it required some patience at the beginning), but whenever I bought a new game, I'd download it onto the memory card, then use the content manager and drop it onto my PC. I've now got a copy of my entire library of games I want to play on my laptop, and the 8GB can carry maybe 3 or so big games and a handful of small indies at any given time. And with how I play games, I usually spend a lot of time on one working towards a platinum or something, so I rarely have to swap between more than three games at a time. When I finish one, I delete it and pull down another using the PC content manager, and I never have to swap any cards.

Right now, my memory card has Dragonball Z: BOZ, Lego Batman 3, Hot Shots Golf, Resogun, Murasaki Baby, Thomas Was Alone, and the Unfinished Swan (with Walking Dead sitting in the game slot) which is plenty for me to play before I need to change any. If you think this will work for you, you can give it a shot.

I have a psn friend who just today was using the same tactic as you. I doubt he has the exact same setup, but he had to grab EDF 2017 of off his pc at any rate. My 4x 32 gb setup is actually not too shabby either. And I always have a physical copy of whatever in the Vita as well.

Android has an option to safely remove it. It probably isn't very common to corrupt a card, but if they put an option there it can, at least, be a possibility. I cannot say much about this, because I usually only remove it when I buy a new phone. I have the same 16 GB card for a good 4 years.
