Why don't you just turn off the vita? Or perhaps do something yourself to remember whether it's on sleep mode or not

The Vita has an awesome, low power sleep mode, so it's pretty organic to just let it go to sleep and not have a second thought about it. I do tend to power it off fairly often however. As for trying to remember to check on it somehow: That is the crux, isn't it? I do have a method. Simply tapping the power button quickly tells me if it's in sleep mode on not. I just miss that one step on occasion.
