Forums - Gaming - Star Trek Online coming to PS4/Xbox One

Star Trek Online is well into its sixth year and showing no signs of stopping. Over our storied history we’ve seen a new faction, two level cap increases, more episodes than any 5 seasons of any Star Trek series, the creation of over 100,000 player generated missions, and celebrity voice work from every era of Star Trek. With all of those accomplishments there is still another frontier yet to explore, the console space.

This fall, Star Trek Online will be launching simultaneously on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. Our goal is to deliver the same high quality Star Trek experience to players on these consoles, with some additional upgrades to make the transition to the console space a smooth and natural experience.

Our first major task was to convert a PC game that takes nearly an entire keyboard to play into a game that plays well with a 12 button controller. We focused on getting the controls right before we began work in earnest on this project, because we knew the game had to be as tactical, fun, and accessible as the PC game that preceded it. A combination of radial menus and streamlining of some HUD elements created a game that is easily understood, instantly accessible, and incredibly fun to play.

I enjoyed this when it first launch and could be tempted to get into it again.

Whoa, this was fantastic when I first played it and had always meant to return to it after it turned free to play, will it have the same F2P setup on the consoles I wonder.

Awesome news, great that they must be getting so much money from this on the PC to be considering spreading into new outlets.

Yeah, I used to play it on PC too. I will definitely be playing it again now that it's coming to consoles. They've added so much stuff since I used to play, they even got most of Voyager's cast to come back and do voice work for some missions, and a few other Star Trek actors as well.

The switch to F2P was defiitely profitable for them. If I remember correctly they said profits increased several fold when they made the switch from P2P to F2P. And the good news is that it's not really pay to win like some F2P games, most of the stuff you can buy is cosmetic from what I remember.

Yeah I heard great things about the way they had new episodes, I think they were getting new content, even if it was in small portions every saturday or so, compared to the not free to play WoW which hasn't gotten a single update in about 6 months and wont be getting one until the launch of Legion you can see why it was a tempting game to jump towards. I just hadn't gotten around to redownloading it, but on the consoles, it's going to be far easier to jump in with it on the PS4 and remotely onto the Vita.... oh god... mmo on the toilet, such a bad idea.

They must of made a good amount from Neverwinter so this was the next game they decided to bring over :) It will be F2p on console as well.

I'm also interested in if each PS4 and Xbox have their own server or if there is some sort of agreement to have one combined server but that's down to Sony/Microsoft to agree to all that as especially for MMO a bigger userbase is always better.

I'm loving this trend of PC type games coming to console. Long may it last. diversity is never a bad thing.

Star Trek Online had a very good system back when it launched on the PC for instancing out portions of the server hardware, it would only accomodate resources to create a new instance of each zone if there was enough players to cause overflow on their first instance of it, worked really well for making sure no where ever got too crowded but also from a resource point of view I'd think it worked wonders for keeping costs down to basically only have instances of area's running while there was players to accomodate them.

I couldn't imagine an MMO like this working Xplatform though... maybe between one of the consoles and the PC like with DCU-Online but really this would be a strange title (small scale) to allow such a massive thing happen as pvp vs X1 and PS4 fans.

Your probably right but lets hold a little hope for a combined console server :)

You've had them before and also 11.

It's lasting for both plats though which of course isn't a bad thing either in terms of diversity.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
