Review Standards for Videogames: Out of 100 points
Star Fox 64 3D
Originality: This is a weird review because it is a remaster, so I’m going to split it up into two parts (Originality, story, art style, and fun will be the old version, and graphics/interface/controls will be based on the new version). Overall, this game was incredibly unique when it came out. I can’t tell you how many times I, my friends, and random people (in reference stories) have played through this game. The alternative routes in the game, the fact that it felt like a multi hour action movie you were a part of, and the odes to Independence Day (that one planet…) and Star Wars (young pilot in search of his father) combined with animals flying spaceships (giving it a very Nintendo like feel) and a boss that is straight up evil (no redeeming quality, unlike Bowser and other Nintendo villains) makes this a refreshing experience for when it was released. This game, in my opinion, was unparalleled until Rogue Squadron games came on my radar in the next generation of consoles (GameCube).
17/20
Graphics: They definitely enhanced a lot of things on the original (especially the colors/lighting of the game) in terms of graphics.
8/10
Art Style: This art style was pretty fitting for the time it came out. Many people dislike it in its modern iteration (Zero) because the visuals kind of show how basic the art style is, but the original game was great looking with this style, as is the 3d remake (which is by no means HD looking).
13/15
Story: While it steals some things from certain super popular sci fi stories before it, this game introduces enough dialogue, character development, backstory, and twists to make it one of the more interesting stories Nintendo 1st party games has produced. It’s no Paper Mario TTYD, but it’s good nonetheless.
23/30
Game Interface: Annoying or not? No issues at all, thankfully!
5/5
Controls easy and fluid or difficult and rigid? Controls were very easy. It actually felt a lot easier than the original 64 controller on the 3ds. Of course, I have always thought the 64 controller was one of the worst, if not the worst, controller I’ve ever had in my hands.
5/5
Is it fun? Hours of replayability and alternative routes. This is the perfect game for speed run tournaments and point based tournaments because it doesn’t take you a whole weekend to beat. Absolutely a blast and never gets dull for the short game it is.
