Interesting how a thread about revenue in 2015 turned into a thread about revenue from past consoles. I guess when you're dealing with the Wii U's lack of growth, trying to flip subjects to something favorable is a necessary tactic.
Moving back to the original topic, I'm sure Nintendo makes a lot more profit per unit sold than Sony, as the lion's share of their sales are probably of their own software, but there is definitely nothing bad about selling an absolute ton of third party software and making money off each one. That's a system where third parties are happy, the console manufacturer is happy, and the consumer is happy because games. Volume means a healthy user base.

This should be good enough. There are obviously a few years missing at the end. Sony's total on this graph with very rough maths: ~300 billion yen Sony hasn't been doing too hot in the years that are missing. Should average a profit of ~50 billion yen per year. |
Thank you , these operating income graphs really show how different the margins and spending between both companies are , and to me show that we don't have an homogenous industry in which a one size fits all in regard to how they should structure themselves going forward, regardless of the what some people think.
PS , the graphs I vaguely remember where from Kowen.
Research shows Video games help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot
I'd be curious to see how much money they take in (or lose) total when combining the profit from this with how much money they have to dish out for exclusive games or to make 3rd parties happy. Yes, Nintendo doesn't get money from have online for their customers but they also aren't forced to suck up to companies like EA, Activision, or Ubisoft because people buy Nintendo products to play Nintendo games (typically) and not those games anyway.
Still, over the last 30 years, Nintendo has by FAR dominated the profit margin compared to any other video game hardware/software maker.

You're obviously not litteraly forced to do so but if you try to play a game without paying for PS+ like Destiny( or any online multiplayer based game ) you won't be able to experience the game at his full potential b'cause you can't get acess to the multiplayer. Basically, your content is getting cut. This system is insidious. |
Well, if I tried to play a game without paying for DLC, I won't be able to experience the game at its full potential. And yet, people don't complain about being forced to buy DLC. It's very similar.
Not a surprise. PlayStation always had and has greatest lineup of games from all developers. With PS4's huge userbase it was expected.
Proof that Nintendo need to charge for their online services, even if it's just 20 or 25 dollars per annum. They need to get the cogs moving again and get things in that department progressing....
Last time I wanted to play online on a Nintendo console I had to exchange a big long code with my friend and we both had to enter on our consoles.... that is archaic nonsense. Let it be a social experience and a good one that feels expansive and involving. Reward and involve your userbase, do not punish people who are posting clips on youtube, they are promoting your games for free.
These things need to change. I want Nintendo to succeed.
