It's by far the more popular system over there, that's why. Portable gaming is just the preference in Japan.

I meant in terms of lifetime sales. 3DS has sold to 20m+ consumers so they're reaching market saturation for the platform, whereas the PS4 is just hitting its stride with the games that will sell it (FFXV, Persona 5, etc.)

Although the 3DS does have a good lineup for its (most likely) final year and I'm interested to see the extent to which those move hardware.

Yeah, this is a myth. While not as strong as North America, for example, main Zelda games usually do very well in Japan. All mainline games, except Skyward Sword (400k) did 500k+ there, and this is pretty good for Japan. Even remakes, like Ocarina 3D and Majora's 3D did well (600k and 700k).

Well played sir and Japan is a country with very good wifi to do it!  Plus you'd be playing the superior version on your handheld.
