Forums - Sony - AMD basically confirms the PS4K and/or an Xbox One revision

What does AMD mean?

PS4K 65 50.39%

Xbox One revision 15 11.63%

Both 49 37.98%

Total:129

Coming from AMD's Q4 2015 Earings Call:

In our EESC segment, we had record shipments of our semi-custom SoCs powering the Playstation 4 and Xbox One game consoles.

Demand for game consoles looks strong for 2016 and we remain on track to generate additional revenue from new semi-custom business in the second half of 2016.

Game consoles -- we see units going up 2016 to 2015. We've also said in the enterprise embedded and semi-custom segment that we will be ramping some new design revenue in the second half of 2016.

We have new products being introduced in both the businesses with the new design wins in the second half on the semi-custom side.

I think they are referring to the PS4K or a new Xbox One console.

Obviously, they don't mean NX since it won't launch this year.

It could also mean NX.

"additional revenue from new semi-custom business"

New business, that needs a semi custom chip from amd? who could that be? I wonder.

I mean, AMD are already makeing chips for Xbox & playstation.... someone new you say? counts console makers off on fingers...

Another hilarious Poll where you pushing your agenda that NX will not launch this year or that Wii U have lotsa life and support left. Really, really sad.

Also it's hilarious and sad in same time when you say "Obviously, they don't mean NX since it won't launch this year."

It's most likely the PS4's VR unit, which has a processing module made by AMD. Anything 4K would be embedded in their R&D budget, which is paid for mostly by Sony/MS/Nintendo until it goes into production.

Um. No. The box has no GPU in it..  As stated : The PS4 handles all rendering and processing on its own, and the processing unit cannot be accessed by developers.  It does these things:

  • powers 3D audio
  • enables the social screen (VR gameplay displayed on TV for observers and other players)
  • enables a totally separate stream of audio and video to the TV
  • displays the PS4 interface and 2D content in Cinematic Mode
Thats it..

DreamCast 2 Confirmed, Sega, is back in the fight.

I'm kind of thinking MS isn't ready to release the next version of the Xbox One (meaning upgraded performance) If I had to guess It's the PS4.5 and the NX. We'll probably only see an Xbox Slim this year. That's just how I feel at the moment. We'll probably know a lot more once E3 comes in a couple months.

There is any reason for Why every single console is made with AMD, and not with Nvidia ?.

So wrong .... this is directly referring to NX.

A few reasons. The main reason the original Xbox was around for four years was because Nvidia screwed MS on the contract. They were locked into a set price for the GPU. So while the cost of the PS2 and Gamecube decreased dramatically over time the Xbox remained expensive to manufacture. This contributed to MS losing so much money on the Xbox.

While the contract situation was better for Sony on the PS3, the GPU they delivered was inferior to Xbox 360's. The Cell was often used to compensate for the GPU.

Nvidia says they don't have interest in the low profit margins of the console market. I'm not sure if that's PR spin for AMD owning the console market or fact. While the console business does have low profit margins, it's a steady source of income over 4+ year period for a single chip design.

What can be stated is that AMD has been easier to work with. Nintendo has worked with since the Gamecube*. MS started working with on the 360. Sony followed suit with PS4. They provided cost effective solutions and client friendly contacts.

*ArtX designed the Gamecube GPU. They were subsequently acquired by ATI prior to the launch of their Radeon graphics card line. AMD later acquired ATI.
