I dunno.... I think that people like having collections visible, it's the acquisitive get more money get more stuff thing. You can't have a cool collection of HD movies on a zip disk, even if they are in HD. You'll still be only to put a handful of movies on your 360 or 720 b/c HD will eat up space like no tomorow. So, only being able to put a maximum of 5 or 6 HD movies on one machine is gonna limit the sales that the 720 and even MS's upcoming HD-download service.

The PS3 will be able to use Netflix, but only if you get a $3 disc from Netflix. Sony should have their own movie service up soon, maybe even as early as the update which overhauls the PS Store.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

so....when will I be able to use my mastery of the mishima style karate to beat you in tekken 6?

How about Blue-Ray for non-movie content (like the PS3). Will the next XBOX have blue ray drive for storage? The PC?

Or do you guys think that the next gen of consoles will be focusing more on DLC and less on retail-based distribution?

Well, it has recently been reported that MS's negotiations with Sony about putting a BD drive on as the 360-addon or otherwise are now dead in the water. So.... probably not.

There are a few problems with the whole "download is the future" claims.

1. Bandwidth...not every ISP allows you unlimited bandwidth...probably very few actually. HD videos will waste a huge chunk of bandwidth for people.

2. Speed. I doubt very many people buy the highest package their ISP offers...most probably get the basic 768k highspeed if they can get it in their area. At 768k, it will take forever and a day just to download one HD movie.

3. Space. Hard Drives aren't infinite you know, they run out of space. With physical discs, you aren't limited to how many movies you can have. You can have as many movies as there are discs.

Not only those...but we haven't really reached a time where the average person is tech-savvy for that kind of thing. Hell, I doubt the average person is very tech-savvy to understand they need an HDMI cable for HD without being told by someone else when buying and HDTV. Ok...maybe that's underestimating people a little...but I live in an area where most parents need their kids help to set up a DVD player.

I don't understand why people keep saying that downloads are the future. I do not live in a big town, most of the worlds population doesn't, and to get speeds that you would need to not only download one real high def movie but multiple is expensive. Also, not everyone is tech savvy enough to stream movies (if that technology even exists) at a high enough speed to the TV for high def let alone burn the movie onto a disc to play in a player. But with HDTVs being pretty much the only thing you can buy now a days and TVs not lasting forever, more and more people will get HDTVs.

Well, I live in a big town, top 10 biggest city in the world and I'm getting 6Kp/s via Itune right now, (donwloading my IGN podcast). and I'm paying 40 bucks a month for cable internet with 25 GB quota. I'm having problem loading this page right now.

Now, are you going to tell me download is the future? Prove it to me.

Is that question directed at me or is it a question directed at someone who thinks downloads are the future of movies?

Holy crap? 6kps for 40bucks a month? I pay 19 bucks a month AFTER tax and sometimes I get as much as 181kps. :P

In 2005 there were approximately 350 Million broadband internet subscribers worldwide (including business subscriptions) ... If you make the assumption that 20% of those are for home use and fast enough for movie downloads that means that there are more people today who could take advantage of a movie download service then will have bought into Blu-Ray by 2010.
