Forums - Nintendo - Does Nintendo require VR/AR to remain relevant...?

Well preorders aren't anything to go by.  Preorders selling out is nice, but that only has meaning if we know the allocation.  Also, niche products may have high preorders but relatively low sales afterwards, like with JRPG games often do.

As for what Nintendo should do... I dunno.  I agree with you that there needs to be a selling point beyond power, but VR is not it.  VR seems like a niche product to me.  It's fine for what it is, but it's years before it's going to be a mainstream thing if it ever gets there.  It's especially a poor fit for Nintendo's audience.  Nintendo excels in local multiplayer, which VR isn't great for as of now, and kids, whose parents wouldn't want them wearing a TV screen on their eyes.  Aside from this, it doesn't really gel with Nintendo's software.  Some games, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid could be fun with VR, but VR won't add much to things like Mario Bros or any of Nintendo's casual leaning stuff.

I still think Nintendo's best chance for success is evolving the Wii concept (which the Wii U didn't really do).

An issue is that Nintendo's audience seems to be dwindling as shown by the Wii U sales, so it's going to have to expand on that audience somehow, plus reviews have said VR is actually quite effective for casual games such as Lucky's Tale.

However I think evolving the Wii concept may be a good route because if VR does turn out to be a big thing, they'll have a well developed motion controller for it which currently is a large part of the VR experience. If VR doesn't turn out to be a big thing, they haven't wasted any money.

If Nintendo's going for a casual audience, a device that would cost $600 at a bare minimum (more likely $800) is not the way to go.

In a few years, when the prices come down and VR is on more solid ground, maybe.  But, assuming we're talking about the NX here, Nintendo can't launch at that price, and they also would be wise to come up with a different gimmick than Sony and others are doing.

No, of course not. Especially not now since it's too early to even say whether VR itself will be relevant...

I don't think VR is anything vital for Nintendo.

They can remain relevant without having to rely on it just yet.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I guess this is an answer to the discussion made on the other thread. Based on your comment on the other thread, I am gonna keep my opinion to myself because I don't work in the field related to product management so my opinion is going to be pointless anyway.

lmao!!!

This is what i dont understand, why are "controller innovation" & "powerful hardware" the only two other options?

Isn't the more pressing question why controller innovation isn't a viable option when the argument against it just so happens to omit the Wii Remote which was made by *gasp* Nintendo?

On topic: I very much appreciate that this thread was made.

the really funny part is that PSVR, Oculus & Vive all use motion controllers based on the Wii Remote design.

Nintendo will always be relevant

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I think that the tech is still expensive to be massive right now. Maybe in some years it would be massive. It's hard to say. I'm not convinced on VR, though. Cool idea, yeah, but it has to be accompanied with a strong lineup of games. Still, I think that only FPS, horror and racing games would really benefit a lot from VR, and I'm only a fan of horror games lol.

Yep. Suddenly motion controls are not a gimmick and they are popular and cool :P

No. VR is not going to solve the deep management problems inside Nintendo.

VR right now is a gimmick, and if Nintendo do it will be an official gimmick, and as far as I know, gimmicks are the problem with Nintendo.
