Forums - Nintendo - Does Nintendo require VR/AR to remain relevant...?

When Nintendo follows the whims of the industry, no one cares and sales falter.

When Nintendo does their own thing, the Nintendo thing, people are excited and sales go up.

They don't need VR to be successful or relevant. The don't need to be a me too company. They just need to be Nintendo again.

If that's true, then explain the Wii U...And what exactly does "just need to be Nintendo" mean??

So Microsoft/Samsung/Google/Apple arent competition because they target different markets. The same can be said for Oculus & Vive, those are for high-end PCs which is an entirely different market from Nintendo so that leaves just Sony with PSVR. Basically what your saying is that Sony is doing so Nintendo is doomed if they dont?

Ok i can agree that Bayonetta & Devil's Third didnt really catch on but neither did Ico or Silent Hill (hasnt sold over 1 million in 15 years) so you are contradicting yourself, the only title you listed that is somewhat relevant is Dark Souls which does around 2-3 million.

Also Nintendo thinks that half-naked women is mature? You do realize that they have been getting alot flak lately for minimizing the amount of revealing outfits in games?

Im confused about the Metal Gear statement, are you saying they do or dont utilize half-naked women? Because if your saying they dont than you have no idea what you're talking about.

If Sony are the only competition in the console market, that means Nintendo is in a good place to challenge them because the market surely won't be saturated and will allow for innovation.

If you look at the hype for Silent Hills, there is clearly the market there, and the same goes for the Ico series (Last Guardian). That is when Japanese gaming is at it's best for a general western audience.

Has the criticism about Nintendo actually come from a good industry source like shareholders or just people on forums whining?

As for Metal Gear, see the below:

To be fair thats really only one game in the series where they went over the top with the half naked chick, the difference is the series is not known for that and thats not why people like to play those games in the first place, its just one part of a very large machine and not even an important one. Bayonetta the whole character is her being essentially naked covered in her own hair. Big difference

Ya, Raiden didnt run around naked in MGS2 and Eva's tits werent hanging out in MGS3.

You also ignored my point that Nintendo went out of the way to reduce revealing costumes in games.

ya, i never said Nintendo shouldnt invest in VR, i said its not required of them. If they want to fight Sony for VR dominance than they can go ahead and do that but to say its required of them is false.

Internet hype means nothing, it doesnt accuretely determine success among the general market. Silent Hill has sold over 1 million in 15 years and has never sold over 2 million same goes for Ico Series so there is nothing that suggests hype will actually make these games sell extremely well.

And i addressed Oniyides point.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I think Nintendo are trying to answer this question themselves.

Which may be they reason the NX is staying firmly under wraps, as they wait out the launch of the first VR devices.

Personally, after having been to the GDC this year, I'm still not particularly impressed by the current state of VR, and I still don't see what it's really adding to video games. The one possible exception being the Vive, but the setup this thing requires is not for ordinary people. And certainly not for impaired people.

As I see it so far, the market for VR is way too slim, and Nintendo is all about inclusiveness, but let's see come E3.

all i know is vr isn't innovative until nintendo makes it. and then sony copied it from nintendo.

Raiden is male, and that part of the game accounted for what 10-15mins? out of like a 6hour game? was that part a selling point of the game? NO was it even the most talked about?NO would that game have gotten the same amount of attention and sales without it? YES. Come on. Eva tits out was not her half naked, she was wearing a bra, i feel you are reaching you cant compare that to Bayonetta, come on.

I ignored it because i dont care because i was talking about Metal Gear and the comparison and how it doesnt work. Bayo was partly sold on shock value the Metal Gear series wasnt. Ninty reduced revealing costumes in games...ok...bravo. Whats the point?

Poor branding, poor marketing, poor pricing.  The console was far too much of a PS3/X360 with a touch screen controller for the masses to get excited about.

Nintendo being Nintendo means innovating.  The Wii U didn't innovate, it iterated.

Nintendo being Nintendo means getting the industry to change according to it, not changing to fit into the industry.

serious question, when was the last time Ninty did that if ever? I think the days of Ninty having that kind of power are long over.

PS4tw said Nintendo thinks maturity means half-naked women running around, the fact that games made by them tone these things down shows they dont feel its mature to include them.

touch screen & motion control gaming maybe? Which are incorporated in nearly every gaming device now.

Nintenso sold over 250 million units of hardware and nearly 2 billion units of software last generation.

fair enough. I'll go on record and say I dont agree with his assestment on Ninty and maturity, I just thought the comparison to Metal Gear was a bad one.
