The most fun I've had with a TPS has been with Splatoon.
Honorable mentions go to Tomb Raider 2013, the Mass Effect trilogy (which is kinda different since it's also an RPG but whatever) and Dead Space 1/2.

Mass Effect 3 (c'mon, come at me! :P) story-wise. Not a RPG for me, it's more a TPS than anything else, Splatoon because of the fun.
I am not a huge 3rd Person Shooter fan, but there have been some I liked.
Fast paced- The Division, honestly its the 1st TPS that feels as intuitive to me as playing a FPS.
Slower paced- Gonna have to with TLOU even though I don't really consider it a TPS at all. Its a 3rd Person Adventure game. But it does have alot of shooting from the 3rd person so I guess it counts.
Another older game that really advanced TPS was Freedom Fighters for the GC and PS2 (probably was on Xbox also, I cant remember). Really good game for its time. It from like 02/03 Pre-RE4.
Edit- So I went back and read the post in this game and it seems some classify any game in the 3rd person that has shooting elements in it a TPS.... Call a game like Infamous a TPS would be like calling Skyrim an FPS. I also saw some platformers rolled into this. Is Super Mario Sunshine a TPS now? I mean he shoots his water cannon alot.
Here is a very basic definition.
"Third-person shooter is a subgenre of 3D shooter games in which the player character is visible on-screen, and the gameplay consists primarily of shooting."
So for instance, I have played MGS1, 2, and 5. 1 and 2 are NOT TPS, while MGS5 probably is. The earlier titles were Action-Stealth games. RE is another example. 1, 2, and 3 were straight up survival horror, in fact the games were not even in what we consider a 3rd person(techically yes) the camera was isometic. With RE4 I can see how it would be classified as such(I still consider it Survivial Horror), by 6 RE became a straight up TPS.
I am not trying to nitpick but some of the games listed are top of their class for sure, in another genre. That is why I felt iffy about putting TLOU up there. Most of the combat is shooting, but I really dont see it as a "shooter".

MGS hardly counts as a 3rd person shooter, same with Uncharted. They just have shooting mechanics, and Mass Effect also falls under this category. All 3 being some of the best games of all times :3
While Resident Evil is debateable. I will need to go with 4 onward since they practically are 3rd person shooters now.
Gears of War is also up there thanks to its mind blowing multiplayer.
I think people are just throwing 3rd person games that shouldn't exactly be classified that as they are games with heavy shooter elements, but not the core experience of the game.

ya I just edited my post with a mini rant about the same thing. MGS5 may be TPS, but the ealier ones definitly were not. Mass Effect is an RPG. Uncharted is an adventure game. Agree complete on RE, 5 and 6 definitly are TPS, 4 is in between, 1-3 and 0 are NOT TPS.
Like I said in my post, it would be like if the OP was about what is the best FPS alltime and people said Skyrim, or Myst.

I found the papercut, bullet-sponges enemies a step-down to the enemies found in RE4/5. |
I hated the controls of resi 4,5 and 6. Some of the worst in the 3rd person industry.

I don't agree, especially when the games are designed with those controls in mind. :P
