As for games that happen to be TPS
1, TLOU
2, Uncharted 2
3, Mass effect 2
4, Gears 2 (I only played 2)
5, Infamous SS

Mechanics
1. Gears 2
2. Infamous SS
3. Mass effect 3
4. Resident evil 5
5. TLOU

This is a good way to conduct thelist. I will do the same to mine, but I fail to see why Infamous SS has good ''mechanics''. Is the alt fire stuff???

I think Infamous Second son offers very fluid and natural YPS mechanics in it's respected environment. Combining all these powers in a single game balance them and make all playstyles accessible with it is no easy task. Besides being fluently able to traverse vertical and horizontal in 3rd person combat offers new possibilities. The powers are also worked out quite while as is the cover system, if only the story and missions where better it would end up higher on my regular list.

Don't get me wrong, but shooting mechanics in RE5 (as in RE4 and others) are worst in the genre now. Mechanics are extremely outdated since you can't aim and move at the same time, just turn and move also impossible. I love RE5, but shooting mechanics are outdated. Covering system also is very bad. U can cover only at exclusive places if u see the button suggest.

But I agree that Gears and Infamous games are the best at combat mechanics.

Same as you have mentioned :)

Resi 5, MGS IV-V, Gears, Alan Wake, ORC (yes I am the strange one).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

1. The Last of Us
2. Uncharted 2
3. Uncharted 3
4. Resident Evil 5
5. Metal Gear Solid 3

For a normal TPS they are indeed bad, but they worked quite well for the Resident evil games. If you put in gears of war mechanics in RE5 it just wouldn't work. But I see where you are going at.

Max Payne 1, Max Payne 2. I will owe you the rest.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

We have two juggernauts incoming in the next few weeks on each of the main two consoles (sorry Wii U).

Quantum Break and Uncharted 4 are undoubtedly going to be stellar experiences and as a PS4 owner I personally can't wait to finish the saga as I am sure many Xbox gamers cannot wait to begin theirs.

I noticed quite a debate in the Quantum Break thread after somebody said "QB tries to push TPS in a way that no other game did since Gears 1"....

The statement seeme rather shortsighted and very focused on one console brand, so I thought I would address the topic directly here.

An evolution in TPS's began in 2005, I had a Gamecube and PS2 at the time and was lucky enough to be there on day 1 for Resident Evil 4. This game brought the "over-the-shoulder" camera to the TPS genre and it is now standard. It also blended shooting with melee attacks... weakening targets in various points to then trigger a custom melee (loved Weskers sliding punch).

Wrong. Splinter did that in 2001.

The best Third Person SHOOTER mechanics list is as follows;

5. Max Payne 3

4. Splinter Cell Conviction

3. Ghost Recon Future Warfare

2. Freedom Fighters

1. Gears of War 3

The above games, are first most shooters, and the way the player moves and enters into over the shoulder in TPS games is very important, whether its straffing, getting into cover or shooting while in motion and general visceral gunplay mechanics. The above 5 games do this perfectly.

Some games have done great to ''evolve'' the Third Person Shooter genre into Third Person ''.........'' , ie other genres, the pioneer being Splinter Cell way back in 2001.

Since then, you have Resident Evil 4, Uncharted, Dead Space and The Last of Us doing the same for their respective genres. While they are not as good as shooters as the above games, they have integrated and influenced the TPS genre just as much as the top 5.

Overall 3rd Person games /by series

5. Hitman Silent Assassin / Contracts

4. The Last of Us

3. Mass Effect 1 - Conviction

2. Mass Effect 1 - 3

1. Gears of War 1 - 3

Ah, totally forgot about Splinter Cell. I actually had it at the time on PC. Great game, the stealth system using shadows and noise was fantastic too.

Conviction was the last great Splinter Cell IMO, so I really like that you have it in your lists. Love Hitman too!

RE6. Unbeatable gameplay, every other tps wishes they played like this.

I found the papercut, bullet-sponges enemies a step-down to the enemies found in RE4/5.

Gears of War by far, still unmatched 3rd person shooter mechanics. Simply the best. Max Payne 3 is second one, amazing gameplay but not so much cover oriented. There have been other good ones but they're not worth mentioning now. Haven't played Division though.

I don't consider games like Uncharted and Alan Wake shooters, 3rd person adventure they are imo. As a shooter they got nothing on Gears. In my opinion, naturally.
