Forums - Gaming - Irish and Celtic culture in games

It's nearly the end of March and with St. Patricks day behind us and Easter before us I would like to discuss Irish characters, culture and contributions to gaming.

The first experience I remember, playing a game and being proud of my heritage was the intro to Metal Gear Solid....

As Solid Snake is shot out of the torpedo bay of the sub and approaches Shadow Moses Island, this song plays (it is in MGS4 also);

For me, this was a watershed moment in gaming that signalled a more mature approach to storytelling and how emotive games can be.

In recent news, we had Havok (Dublin based) being bought by Microsoft from Intel and we have Hellblade with some strong Celtic influences...

If you'd like to contribute to the topic, don't worry about criticising or having negative impressions.... All views are welcome.

P.S. Kinda Funny mentioning The Cranberries almost every week, hilarious!

Also about to watch Black Mass!

Civ 5 has Boudicca & the Celts, though I don't play as them much.

The Endless Ocean games have some beautiful folk music from Britain & Ireland.

Also series like Tomb Raider often include Celtic mythology.

Darksiders 2 is very influenced by Irish culture

Ah The heist in 4. Must have inspired the whole of V. They were a highlight of the game for me until I decided his sister would't survive.

There was Irish in Red Dead too! But he might just have been called Irish.

Had no idea about Darksiders, I'm gonna check that out now. Was there some game called Folklore? Heard something like that...

Well that's really interesting. I found both the first and second enjoyable

The black guy in battlefield 4 was called Irish just like the black guy in captain Philips (the movie)  was called Irish lol.

Go play (or at least read about) Folklore. Beautiful game.
