Forums - Sony - The Pre-launch PSVR Strategy Anomoly.

I said this a while ago but Sony's strategy leading up to the release of VR has been odd. We know that the PS4 controller was designed with VR in mind and we know that the camera is necessary for the headset to work. We also know that for the full experience you're likely to need the MOVE controllers. So why hasn't Sony done the obvious thing of porting MOVE games over to the PS4? They need people to own the Camera. They want people to buy the MOVE controller, so why on earth didn't they give people a reason to in preparation for the launch of VR? It just doesn't make much sense, unless Sony wanted to be very careful about VR and its connection to motion gaming, but that was scuppered when they tried the frisby demo live on stage at the Playstation Experience.

For me something doesn't quite add up. It seems such an obvious thing to do.

I think you are ignoring the fact that porting games to a different console is done by the game developer, not the console manufacturer.

That's neither here nor there. If it's part of your strategy then you make sure other devs are on board. This thread isn't a criticism, it's simply a question. For instance, if they'd have ported Sports Champions over to the PS4, they could have marketed it as they did BUZZ or Singstar. That Christmas crowd are eventually what Sony will want on board, so why not grab a few casuals in preparation for PSVR?

Perhaps because they wanted exclusives built from the ground up with the tech in mind, as opposed to retrofitting older software with VR as an afterthought? There's a really fine line they're walking like you mentioned. There's more riding on the early VR wars than there ever was on motion gaming.

That's not the point I'm making. I'm talking about the opportunity Sony passed on to get people to buy the PS Camera or MOVE controllers before VR launched. More people would then have been set up for the Headset. Sports Champion would have been a good start. They definitely passed this opportunity over and my question is why?

I'd love to be able to play my favorite PS3 move games on PS4.

Lots of people sold their MOVE controllers but if they'd known they could be used on the PS4 they'd more likely have kept them. The more people that  own the hardware necessary for PSVR, the cheaper it would have been for them when it releases. The fact Sony have only released the base unit in Europe shows quite clearly they're initially gunning for those who already own the camera (or MOVE) so why not make sure there was more of them?

My opinion, many of the games designed for Move on the PS3, were not designed with VR in mind. You have to remember, devs HAVE to create games where people aren't getting sick and barfing all over the place. Not a single one of those games from past gens were ever designed with this in mind.

This is why Rigs HUD includes the interior frame of the mechs cockpit, so you have a fixed point at all times, as opposed to just the whole screen moving around constantly.

This isn't about VR. This is about getting the equipment in people's hands before VR releases. That's why I've put 'Pre-Launch Strategy'.

Then the only two reasons I could possibly fathom are

A) to make their strategy better hidden from everyone else

or

B) they've been messing with VR for a long while but haven't been sure when to push the tech. The momentum behind Oculus Rift Dev kit caught them off guard and so what we're seeing from them now is somewhat reactionary.
