Forums - Sony - Kotaku - Sources: Sony Is Working On A ‘PS4.5’

All 7 people who have a 4k TV are going to really love this.

Thats a pretty ignorant statement man....  4K is the mainline standard for mid grade TVs.

You spend between $850-1100 and you get a 50" 4k resolution, 120-240 (using reprojection) Samsung/Vizio/Sony TV.

If people are buying the shitty < $850 TVs -- they either don't need the size (so 4k is pointless), or they are the kind of people that buy shitty westinghouses on black friday anyways (nothing against them for that... they just don't need or care for better than 1080p).

Would be funny if true considering how MS got shat on here for the same idea.

I doubt its really for 4k gaming, unless they mean maybe at current PS4 graphics at 30fps. Anything more and I think the price will be too high. But 4k video, a better VR experience, and more power for all other games seems like a win win. Idk why people assume it would be terrible. You can have a lower tiered model and a premium model as long as people aren't punished for using the lower tier model.

I agree, I think people are seeing 4.5 and feeling that 4 will feel obsolete. They should not call it 4.5.... something like pro or elite would be better. As you say to emphasise it is simply a tier.

I think they have a lot to gain actually: Better VR experience, broader market(ing) appeal, higher profit margin and most off all a larger install base(wich mean more software sales and PS Plus subscriptions). Because what will happen to all those PS4's that get replaced? Exactly they get sold off, giving more people access to an affordable PS4 and thereby creating a larger install base. And the greatest thing for Sony is they don't have to cut into their own profit margins for that, and they make money on every PS4.5 that is sold.

If you want something like that go with steam machines. The reason why I bought a PS4 is to play it's exclusives and to play the best versions of 3rd party games for consoles. I do not want to have to upgrade to keep doing that. It's why I went with home consoles and not pc or steam machines. Many others echo that line of though hence why steam machines haven't done anything to home consoles.

I don't get it, no one would be forcing you to upgrade. You're PS4 version of a game would look and play exactly the same regartless if an PS4.5 exists or not. The bottom line is we would have more choice and a more powerfull option, and Sony makes more money. The way i see it, everyone wins.

Just name it PS4 Slim and be done with it. lol!

i really don't need 4k gaming since i only have a 1080p TV, but will be glad if they make a high end PS4 that cost maybe $100~$200 more just for a much better overall performance

I would be VERY disappointed if Sony does this.

The idea is fucking ridiculous imo.

The silence from Sony's people also pisses me off. If the rumor is not true, come out and say it for Christ sakes.

thats because at this poiht you can pretty much get a PC if you want to expierence Xbox Games in better performance. MS ported and is planning to port every exclusive to the PC and even the button layout is the same with PC with the Xbox.

This has got to be fake. If Sony is working on new HW, then it would most definitely be the PS5, not a PS4.5. Considering we are only 2-3 years away from the PS5's launch, it would make sense for them to be prepping for it, now. There is no point in coming out with a half measure. They never work. Especially not in the home console market. Console gamers want to buy HW, know it'll last them through a 5-6 year gen, then purchase a much better predecessor. It's really the same reason I see the NX failing, as it seems to be Nintendo's own "32X" to get them through the rest of this gen and through the beginning of the next.

Besides, a GPU that can pull off 4K with PS4 level graphics would be too expensive, right now. In 2018/19, not so much. Are we really talking about a $499+ PS4.5?

Hmm, it probably won't be a problem if it's like the N3DS. People will either start buying that, or people will upgrade. It depends on the price I suppose.

This would also mean the end of console gaming. As I'm sure most would just move to PC gaming. I mean if you're going to have to upgrade HW constantly to keep up with the Joneses, why not just do it on a PC? Doesn't make sense to continue to game on a console when the main draw of a console is completely gone.
