Forums - Gaming - Has "the gap" gotten smaller?

The gap is barely noticeable anymore. A bit of dynamic res and 1-2 fps difference these days. Almost impossible to see or feel in most cases.

That said, 30fps is pretty unbearable for me in any action type game so I don't use my X1 anymore for anything but exclusives (which are slowly diminishing).

It's for a huge part optimisation, but if the gap has shrunk due to optimalisation of Xone drivers, API, acces to a new core etc. will ultimately been proven by the likes of Gears 4 compared to Uncharted 4 etc.

Lazy third parties can always opt to make the PS4 identical to the Xone which means less optimalisation efforts. Or just making the resolution higher, which is also 5 minutes work. What I am saying is the power gap between Xone and PS4 should be interpreted as the gap between the best available on each console and not the willingness of a third party for optimalisation.

I wouldn't call the developers "lazy". The Division graphically looks like one of the best games available this gen.

Yeah. When PS4 is better, it's MUCH better and when Xbox was better, it was slightly better--but I didn't expect it to be better at all! Truth be told, the only reason I got the Xbox version was that my PS4 HDD was totally full (I'm ordering a 2TB HDD on Amazon today, though). I just assumed that as developers got better with the PS4, they'd push it even further.

Not sure why you assumed this.  Specifically from a 3rd party standpoint, devs have been pretty vocal about wanting parity or as close to it, between versions.  Because they don't want to answer to fans, or bigwigs of company A or company B.  The only place anyone will see what either console is capable of, will be from 1st party studios.

Yes, the PS4 is more powerful, but, devs actually have to utilize that power.

Those faster frames on XB1 are in limited areas that are more crowded which probably is more CPU bound than GPU. The XB1 does have a slightly faster CPU than PS4, so that is what I suspect is happening. Or it could be XB1 is running slightly different graphical settings that are less taxing in those certain situations. At any rate, the XB1 is clearly inferior to the PS4 in this game.

Both consoles have been low end hardware since the beginning so i wouldn't say so, simply now they use X1's hardware better (well in a way this is also shortening the gap isn't it?).

Developers when it comes to Multiplatform Games will always try to look for performance parity between both versions.

It is more than clear than when it comes to exclusives, there is not even a comparison with Ps4 games because the console is factually more powerful than the X1.

People said the gap would only get bigger.  I'm just a simple farm boy. I thought they knew what they were talking about. Sorry! But yeah, I guess Sony will push the console with their exclusives. Still, for the "Xbox only" gamer, is good to know that they aren't getting a far inferior experience like they used to.

I'm just glad that this gen my console is on the right side of the gap. Last gen it was frustrating hearing most multiplats ran worse on playstation. Good to get a gen with things revered.

No need to be sorry, the gap may only be getting bigger, but as I said, it won't matter if devs are more interested in parity than in reaching/surpassing limits.

One thing to point out as a consideration though, is that Sony very often pay out for PS4 owners to have more content in games. So 2-3 hours PS4 only content. Whereas this never seems to happen the other way around, as MS usually pay the extra money to get some timed advantage instead.
