Forums - Gaming - Where would we be without Sony this gen?

You know most of the answers in this thread have just been focusing on the fact that if Sony (as it says in the title) weren't here then they could swap over to gaming on the X1 in its place (presuming it came out in the same shape it is now as a close rival to the ps4) or onto PC master race mode for the games which would be coming to the ps4.

All that said, if Sony wasn't about... I wouldn't have my Vita, which is where I game a massive % of the time I spend in games now, if it isn't Vita games, then PSP, PSone or else PS4 games streamed up to me while in bed using remote play on it, While I could possibly live without the PS4 in front of my TV I'm sure I would feel the lack of the Vita far far worse, it is just such a brilliant perfectly feeling handheld, in my eyes it doesn't have a rival or a potential replacement in the same league as it.

All the while the main thing the 3ds held for me over the Vita was that it had Super Street fighter 4 while the Vita had pretty much every other fighter... but now since the PS4 arrived you also have Ultra Street fighter 4 on the Vita.... as well as the potential to play SFV on it.

Also like others said, if Jack Tretton hadn't come out and dropped the mic at E3 after the disaster X1 reveal then I really don't think the X1 would be in the fantastic shape it is today as a console for consumers, DRM would be all over it, Kinect, no (high powered) competition would have likely led to no work being done on backwards compat emulation since they are doing it for free to try to get their X360 owners to move into X1, you don't offer things like that for free when you're number 1, the PS4 offering ps2 games for €15 is proof of that.

What If Nintendo knew Playstation was bailing out? If Nintendo came out with a powerful system that was "next gen" at or around the same time the ps4 did (even a year later) Nintendo could have become what PS4 is now.

Nintendo would basically snatch up all the Japan games. Plus they would no longer have third party problems. Assuming it was as powerful, or more powerful than the xbox one - and had all the japan games then Nintendo would be sitting very pretty.

Without competition Xbox wouldn't have changed. We may not even have the xbox one if not for competition. So unless Nintendo stepped up - we may not have even started a new gen.

This. If Sony weren't making PS4, it would have drastically changed what both MS and Nintendo did with their consoles. What they would have done and what it would have changed with the Wii U is the most interesting part, imho. Maybe they make a more powerful console than the Wii U. I think for sure with only two consoles around to release games on, a lot more publishers would support the Wii U. And it would get all the niche stuff from Japan PS4 gets. Nothing really substantial on its own, but a lot of smaller stuff that can add up if it appeals to you.

Wii U or whatever Nintendo released with a stronger worldwide brand than Xbox and strong third party support could have easily been the PS4 equivalent. I think the affect on the industry is being wildly overstated by some... I mean, most publishers don't support the Wii U anyway, so we already have really a two system market.

Well with MS's vision of things, I would probably get a PC and game mostly on the Wii U.

Can't take you seriously when you completely disregard nintendo. The game industry would be much better without sony and/or ms, though. So, we would be in a great place.

On those companies lack of understanding of the gaming industry. Thanks to them (at least partially), things that don't deserve to be considered games or should at most be considered niche gaming experiences are taking over real games. It even infected and destroyed established franchises, making them more like movies than actual games. Meanwhile, we get less and less true games from big companies and all of that drags the industry down.

Note that I'm not talking financials here, just that the real games and gamers suffer with the current state of things. As a comparison, there's a huge amount of amazing games from the 6th gen and before that I want to play or replay but only a small number of 3rd party games from this gen will be like that. Ironically, many indies capture the true feel of games better than most AAA.

You think the game industy would be BETTER without any console competition? That comes off as nothing more than "yeah then I would get all the games on my one console'.

There's no need for hardware competition when software is what matters.

Well, I disagree entirely (and it seems like much of the industry does, as well).

You'd be surprised by how many people agree with me. Even most people who say they disagree secretly think otherwise.

I know I would have bought my WiiU for a year and probably have moved to PC or stopped gaming for anything else. I got bored with the WiiU after that and haven't been tempted to come back so I sold it.
