Forums - Sony - Sony: Gamestop's PSVR Fall Launch Just Speculation

Earlier today, reports surfaced that PlayStation VR had slipped from the first half of 2016. Sony has responded, indicating that it is not updating the launch timing for the head-mounted display.

The news was based on comments made by GameStop CEO Paul Raines (Disclosure: GameStop is Game Informer’s parent company). Speaking to Fox News, Raines said that the company expects to start shipping PlayStation VR in the fall.

We reached out to Sony to get some clarification. We received a simple statement in response.

“GameStop was speculating, and we have not released any further details on launch timing,” a Sony representative said via email. The last time Sony said anything to us was to reaffirm that PlayStation VR will be out in the first half of the year.

Our Take
There are a couple of things that could be at play here. Raines could have made a simple mistake, or he might have been speaking from information that Sony isn’t prepared to acknowledge. We won’t know if Raines is accurate until Sony locks down the PSVR release date.

The PS5 Exists.

Around the Network

I would imagine that at this point they don't know exactly what they think is suitable for the PSVR's launch window so they won't confirm anything, nor will they give a reconfirmation of what they've previously stated.

bet: lost

It's almost march, do you still expect it to launch in the next 3 months? It's likely september/fall.

I could see end of June. If they doing announce soon though then maybe not.

I have a feeling that if he were correct than Sony would have stayed quiet. I still expect to get a price, and release date next month at GDC.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.
