Forums - Movies & TV - Will Smith will not attend the Oscars in row over lack of diversity

The most liberal of Democrats are the Hollywood community. No black or gay or Hispanic or Asian or tranny or anything but white bread was nominated. Must be racist or homophobic or xenophobic or agoraphobic or just karma for always chastising the Party that has 2 Hispanics a woman a black man and an Indian that are running for Prez. Remember the Oscars is millionaires who pretend to be someone else patting each other on the back for being the best at fooling people into thinking you aren't yourself. Who Cares!

This is why I like free market and laugh at government control.

In a free market the movie is judged by the public and they can or not support it with their wallet and show if they are against or not bothered the practices used by the company. No need for long essays blaming all people because of it. We already have a lot of hating folks in here that if had power would regulate the industry to only put things they like on the market. But for some reason people think it's a good idea to give that power to government. Because government usually make the worst decision and based on back door deals that are very anti-freedom and customer.

Yep, governments these days are trying too hard to achieve racial/gender parity. People should be rewarded based on their merits, not on their skin color or gender.

there are literally thousands of members of that guild who vote, many of which are minorities and of varying ethnicities themselves. hell, the president of the Oscars guild is black. to imply that its totally rigged is absurd. there might be some prejudices, but that would most likely be in regard to the WINNER not the nominess generally

I can't think of any good examples of great roles and acting jobs, regardless of the race of the actor, that weren't nominated when the majority of the public felt they were deserved

Will Smith and company would have a point if there was some awesome role by an African American that was being ignored, but there isn't one! Will Smith in Concussion just wasn't that good

plenty of people from all different races have won Oscars before. The reality is that there just weren't a lot of great roles lately with variety in ethnicity, it happens. doesn't automatically mean racism just because a bunch of white dudes and dudettes played their roles well

the real thing that Will Smith and company should possibly be 'boycotting' or talking out against is Hollywood in general and the studios who generally seem to prefer picking a white star than a black or Asian or whatever

personally I could care less, its business in the end and whomever is going to bring in the most tickets or is going to do the best portrayal will get the role

but its absurd this 'boycott' of an organization of thousands of voters, especially when there haven't even been any good ethnic roles lately. name one role from 2015 that's being ignored in the Oscars this year that is deserving? there aren't any

others have made some good points too,

Hollywood is basically as liberal and open minded as you can get. to act as if they would deliberately block out certain ethnicites from awards is just stupid. look at how high certain actors of color have gotten in Hollywood: Samuel L Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington

its just a matter of none of the likes of them playing any good roles the last year or two

And when the white folk is represented the same way?

And what way does Hollywood portray white people?

There are several white dudes doing all those vilain, dumb and other not well regarded roles. Just that. If it isn't white then it's prejudice when the character is lesser than a knight in shining armor, if it's white no one bats an eye.

Yep I agree. It's so forced that at one time they will be forcing black, woman, gays and any other minority they focus to do things they don't want just to fit a quota and have a "equal" distribution. What if a black man want to be a musician, a woman want to be a vet and a gay a stylist (yes all of those are steriotypes) should we say no because we need more of them as engineer (not because we lack engineer, but because we lack the right kind).

There is prejudice everywhere, but the call outs are ridiculous in these cases.

As you said and others asked, there were some good roles, but nothing that you could really say confidentily "change A to B because it was so much better".

The black actors you named are about some of my most liked ones.

And if the guild is made of white old racist men, what does their opinion matter? Why does winning their biggoted prize value is?

The "Hollywood Hypocrite" has been a thing as long as Hollywood has been a thing.

They go on TV and tell us all about things that we should be doing, but they don't actually do those things themselves.

They want affirmative action.  But not in movies, because then it affects their jobs.

They're passionate about global warming and tell us that we should all be reducing our carbon emissions - so that they can have 6 houses, a private jet, and a yacht.

They'll complain about big corporations, and gloss over their ties to those big corporations.

Most of the left wing celebrities and "thinkers" are like that. Ask for equality, distribution and several other things that they never display themselves.

Huffington Post in Brazil was very offended by the lack of black people on the nomination. but they themselve have only white folks on the team.
