Forums - Nintendo - Is Nintendo going to be mainstream again?

Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Pokémon are all 10+ million sellers, they still certainly have strong mainstream appeal, I can't think of a single other developer/publisher that has that many huge franchises.

No, they're not, except for Pokemon. Based on the numbers from the WiiU versions, they certainly aren't.

Why in a discussion about Nintendo being mainstream, would we leave out Nintendo's strongest market that consists of 80% of their hardware sales?

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

So Mario Party 10 was ur last game? U chose to end it on that note when Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World & Xenoblade Chronicles X were all set to releases later in the year? Seems like a bad judgment call.

Not into Splatoon, SMM is a less enticing LBP pigeonholed through Mario themes, Yoshi's looked interesting but not enough to hold on, and I'm not into JRPGs

Gotcha, but still........Mario Party is more appealing to u than any of those games?

I thought it would be.  I loved the ones on Gamecube and didn't realize they had turned to that stupid "everyone moves the same" car mechanic now.  That completely ruined the fun randomness and board game aspect of it for me.  I played the N64 ones afterward and had way more fun

I am Iron Man

I haven't played the series since the N64 days. I was kinda interested in the new one for the Bowser mode but haven't gotten around to getting it yet.

80% of their market? Is that number still relevant over the past couple of years?

Answer the question, why would we exclude their strongest market from a discussion about them being mainstream?

It's literally the same thing as asking if Playstation is mainstream then responding no because of Vita sales.

Becasue dedicated handheld gaming isnt mainstream, at least not in the US and Europe. Thats why it would be silly to bring up Vita, becasue for all intents and purposes that is not the MAIN show, its home consoles, its always been like that. So we can brag about portable sales all we want that woudl be like bragging winning a high shcool basketball championship but getting destroyed in the NBA, imho

The discussion is about Nintendo being mainstream, taking away the strongest side of their market makes absolutely no sense.

Like I said, the equivalent would be asking if Playstation is mainstream and using Vita sales to support ur argument. Or asking if Apple is mainstream and using Apple TV to support ur argument. Or asking if Xbox is mainstream and using Xbox Music/Video to support ur argument.

In a discussion about a company or brands relevance, u can't exclude that company or brands strongest area, u cannot have a logical discussion that way.

The fact is that Nintendo will sell over 80 million units of hardware this generation along with something like 200+ million units of Nintendo-published software. They will have something like 6-7 individual games sell over 10 million, about a dozen individual games sell over 5 million, about 25 individual games sell over 2 million, over 50 individual games sell over 1 million.

If Nintendo isn't mainstream than that means Xbox isn't mainstream because Nintendo is likely to sell more hardware than Microsoft. If Nintendo isn't mainstream than neither are Activision, Ubisoft or Electronic Arts since Nintendo will likely sell a similar amount of software as those companies.

Let's first classify that this is mainstream globally in terms of the Video Game industry.

Because the fact is Nintendo is mainstream in Japan and despite recent failures in the home console market, Nintendo still has the most recognizable original franchises in the industry. Right now, their problem is that the majority of industry consumers are not buying their primary systems in the quantities of their competition outside of Japan.

As to whether or not they can return to competitive nature they might, most didn't expect the Wii or the DS to do what they did, They are currently doing enough to survive, time will tell if they do enough to once again be at the top of the hardware industry.
