Let's first classify that this is mainstream globally in terms of the Video Game industry.
Because the fact is Nintendo is mainstream in Japan and despite recent failures in the home console market, Nintendo still has the most recognizable original franchises in the industry. Right now, their problem is that the majority of industry consumers are not buying their primary systems in the quantities of their competition outside of Japan.
As to whether or not they can return to competitive nature they might, most didn't expect the Wii or the DS to do what they did, They are currently doing enough to survive, time will tell if they do enough to once again be at the top of the hardware industry.
