Forums - General - Do you play board games? (Monopoly, Risk, Advanced 3rd Reich, you name it)

I got the sudden urge to make this thread, so here it is.

I'm obviously big on video games, but I'll always love board games too, even if I haven't played enough of them recently.  I play lots of different kinds of games, from "The Game of LIFE" to Monopoly to Risk to Stratego to Acquire to "Axis and Allies".  How can you pass up a game called "Monsters Ravage America"?

Are there many others on the forums that like board games too?  What kinds do you like?  Has anyone here played the really intricate games like Advanced Third Reich, or the simple-yet-challenging (and LONG) Civilization?  (Avalon Hill NOT Sid Meier!  Not that there's anything wrong with that game either.)

Games like Rich Uncle, Superfection, Flying Pirates and Mouse Trap kinda stretch the "board game" concept but don't be afraid to mention them.  Card games (e.g. Munchkin) are also OK but please label them as such.  (As "*CG*" perhaps?  Whatever you want to do.)  Same with quiz games.

My dad is the really hardcore boardgamer in the family; I used to think I'd catch up to him someday but now I don't know.  He wins national tournaments in certain games.

Favorite games:
Empire Builder series (Nippon Rails, Eurorails, Iron Dragon, etc.)
Axis & Allies
Civilization (AH)
Settlers of Catan
Monopoly
Rail Baron
Risk
War at Sea

I can only name some German boardgames which we (family/friends) play quite often. I don't know if they're available in USA:

- Wikinger (Vikings)
- Carcassonne
- Thurn & Taxis
- Jenseits von Theben (East of Thebes) => actually not of German, but of Austrian origin
- Puerto Rico
- Die Säulen der Erde (The Pillars of the Earth)

and one, which you already named:
- The Settlers of Catan
(10 mio copies sold from 1996 to 2002, 8 mio. in Germany alone. I have to play it of course, although I don't really like it anymore, but everybody else around me still does).

But not only German games are very popular in Germany, also Monopoly and other classics. Boardgames are very popular over here.

My mind has changed. My strength has not.    Kamahl, Fist of Krosa

I absolutely love Risk. And Scattagories. Fun stuff.

Monopoly, Life, and the usual game of Guess Who are also fun.

Yes.

Squad Leader was probably the last one.

Have played too many Avalon Hill games to list (and I still have them all packed away). Most memorable ones are probably King Maker and Diplomacy.

One of my best friends is the Nephew of the guy who has the world's 3rd largest board game collection. So, his nephew has a lot.

Personal favourite of mine is Arkham Horror. Though I do like St. Petersburg or Notre Dame. Peurto Rico is fun (Quarries and building wins!) , but some games, like Die Machre seem unbalanced and long.

See Ya George.

Yes.

Talisman and Cosmic Encounter (older editions are the best!) are two of my favourites. Also pretty much anything by Cheapass Games.

For card games, Wizard and Cribbage are amazing. I'm long since done with collectable card games, but Illuninati (NWO or otherwise) will always be awesome.

There is a lot of monopoly being played on my mom's side of the family. We used to play a few years ago, and then it got boring, cuz we overplayed. We started up again when my cousin got the electronic version, but I'm starting to get sick of it again (calculator beeping gives me a headache, and we play it too much......every f'n weekend).

Once in a millions year. I own no board games. Usually, if I play, it is scrabble with my momma.

When I was a kid I loved Monopoly and Sorry!

@Final-Fan, do you know this interesting site?
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=game&sortby=rank&pageID=1

It lists 4358 board games from all over the world with descriptions & member rankings similar to VGChartz. Incredible list.

Going through some pages of this list reminded me of some more board games I own and/or played:
- Antike (light strategy, area control, civlization building)
- Medina (beautiful city building game)
- Yspahan (from French publisher Ystaire, clever mixture of economics and dice rolling)
- Altantic Star (card game, set collection, transportation)
- Bohnanza (very addictive card game, set collection, farming/negotiation)
- Shear Panic (Scottish game, looks like a kids game with its cute sheeps, but the gameplay is abstract strategy)
- Mah-Jongg (what a brilliant "card" classic, gameplay has of course nothing to do with Mah-Jongg video games)
