Forums - Sales - PS4 passes PS3 launch-aligned sales in Japan

Even if we make this comparison just Playstation+Nintendo, the numbers don't look good.

PS1+N64=25 million

PS2+GC=27 million

PS3+Wii=23 million

So the last 3 generations have sold roughly 25 million for Playstation+Nintendo. PS4+Wii U won't even hit 20 million (probably a few million below), the Japanese market is in decline, it's not even a debate. Is it dead? No, not even close but certainly declining.

Consoles are indeed on the decline down there, thankfully the Playstation 4 is doing good there (and better than the Ps3) and because of that we are experiencing a resurgence of Japanese games on this gen, which is a good thing.

That's cool and all but has absolutely nothing to do with what Cosmic and I were talking about.

Also a resurgence in what sense? Hardware & software sales will both be down from last generation.

A resurgence in japanese titles, which were pretty much absent last gen.

It just proves things are better when Playstation does good (for home consoles). There is a crazy amount of ps4 software planned by devs and with the ps4 continuing to do better and better this will only grow.

Pretty much absent last generation? Capcom, Square-Enix, Bandai Namco, Level 5, Tecmo-Koei, Sega, Atlus, Konami, Platinum Games all gave strong support to 7th generation consoles.

Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Dragon's Dogma, Devil May Cry, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales of, Dragonball Z, Metal Gear Solid, Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, White Knight Chronicles, Tekken, Ace Combat, Ni No Kuni, Dark Souls, Yakuza, Valkaria Chronicles, Dynasty Warriors, One Piece, Naruto, Gundam, Super Robot Wars, Pro Evo Soccer, Star Ocean, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Soul Calibur, Sengoku Basara, Earth Defense Force, Star Ocean, J-Stars, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Taiko, Sonic, etc.

All the big Japanese publishers gave strong support last generation, nothing has changed.

And the title of the article is that the PS4 passed the PS3 aligned launch.  So you decided to pit this against Life Time sales?  You should probably save that for the end of the gen and instead show me something relevant to the convo.

I'm well aware of what the title is but look at ur previous post, "they told me consoles were dying in Japan" u were talking about the console market as a whole and unless these consoles have a extra 20 million sales left in them (they dont) than the console market will decline this generation.

I have to agree. Sony themselves have even acknowledged the decline of consoles in Japan and also one of the reasons why they designed Vita TV.

Well even if it goes back and fourth for awhile it does show that the console market is recovering in Japan some. 2016 is pretty stacked for Sony on all fronts all year round (unless delays). So they should take a firm lead by the end of 2016 maybe.

It doesn't seem likely this generation will last as long as the PS3 did though. The weak hardware in these current systems feels like a ticking time bomb to me.

By this time in the PS3's life, going by your metric of "weak", it was in the exact same situation. Heck, the PS2 was even weaker, in this regard. How much did it really matter? None.

OT: I expect the two machines to go back and fourth.

I'm late but I'll give this a try >_<

The PS3 did not have a low end maybe barely med range CPU at the time of launch like the Xbox One and PS4. When it comes to graphics capability they are also significantly weaker compared to the high or most med range technology available at the time of launch compared to what the 360 and PS3 used, which was entirely med range and high end tech at launch. The PS3 in particular despite the programming frustrations of developers with the cell processor, it was comparable to a high end PC at launch (not to be confused with enthusiast level PC components).

Early PS2 days putting together your own PC wasn't as easy as today, laptops were much more expensive back then and even mobile hadn't started taking off effecting the console gaming market in Japan. The same association that a weak console wont matter is over IMO. Competition is abundant much more so then before and the weaker hardware and philosophy of making a profit off the hardware from the beginning will shorten the lifespan and increase short term profits. So It's fully expected Sony and Microsoft have a direct interest in putting new consoles out more often with pleasing price points.

Your wording however almost sounds like you are talking about something else to me. Thought I'd put in more detail... All that said however, PS4 over taking PS3 in Japan is a good sign that the console market may stop shrinking in Japan, stabilize and perhaps see growth compared to recent years seeing Japan moving away from consoles (still has a ways to go).

Anyway the time bomb I'm talking about is that I expect a sharper then usual decline in sales eventually pushing Sony and Microsoft to release new consoles earlier then last generation's time frame. It may very well have been part of their plans from the beginning. It's not a 'it will happen' but rather, I think its likely to happen given the chosen choices they have made with hardware and pricing. I expect it's what Sony and Microsoft want to do. Especially Sony who are toying with the idea of tier'ed console offerings or perhaps moving over and creating a platform similier to steam for consoles.

I'm terrible with word's so hopefully I put it well enough to be understood.lol
