These are numbers for official consoles. Replicated and third party copies aren't included because it gets messy. You can buy replicated version of most old consoles.

Take a look at this you can buy on eBay UK

RETRON 5 9 IN 1 CONSOLE

  1. Nintendo NES
  2. SNES (Super Nintendo)
  3. GameBoy Advance (GBA)
  4. SEGA Genesis
  5. SEGA Mega Drive
  6. Nintendo Famicom
  7. Super Famicom
  8. Gameboy Colour
  9. Game Boy

True, such retro consoles exist, but neither do they have an official licensing deal nor the original hardware, which those in brasil do (or did, not sure about the later editions still having the original hardware, especially the mobile versions)

While we're at it, should the RetroN 5 also chart? Could be considered a console after all.

No. Original systems only. If you can find some data about official console sales in Brazil I can make a note of it in op.

Dang, NES sure was around a long time.

I know for a fact that the Famicom was still going strong in Japan, even after the Super Famicom and N64.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

It's a list I put together with data mostly taken from wiki and Giant Bomb who have a excellent console wiki.

I remember when people kept insisting the Wii was guaranteed to last 10 years on the Market because it was the market leader and people kept mocking Sony for referring to the PS3 as a 10 year console. (Sorry. Quick edit. Just realized it sounded like I was saying the Wii is completely gone.)

I think the PS3 has a few more years while I can't see the Wii making past this year.

I think the Wii will last at least one year more into the NX lifecycle. Its software (and accessories) are still selling surprisingly well, and there's also the possibility of the NX emulating phisical Wii games. Considering that the NX will have to be at the very least PS4 levels of power, emulating Wii games shouldn't be hard, and it would keep those sales going.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

And what is the measure? consoles produced or games released?

Maybe it's selective memory but I don't remember it that way at all!  In fact, the PS3 was supposed to be "future proof".

When they stopped making them.

More important than the end of hardware production (or the official announcement of the discontinuing) is the end of software support (IMHO).

So in which year did these systems get their last good first party games* and in which year did they get their last good third party games*? How many good games were released in the last two years of the system?

* new games, so no late ports or late translations or game collections

For example: even if the NES was discontinued in 2003... it wasn't supported from Nintendo after 1994: http://www.gamefaqs.com/company/1143-nintendo?platform=41&year=0®ion=0&devpub=0

The last Nintendo-published NES-games were Wario's Woods, Megaman 6 and Zoda's Revenge in 1994.

PS2 got its last retail release in 2014: http://venturebeat.com/2014/02/02/playing-the-last-playstation-2-game/

Here is a good article about "swan song games": http://www.usgamer.net/articles/system-swansongs-the-last-games-released-on-the-greatest-consoles
