- GameStop leaves Puerto Rico in March

- official statement

Joey Mooring,

GameStop Official Statement:
Given the ongoing business challenges and increased governmental restraints we have experienced in Puerto Rico, GameStop has made the business decision to close all of its video game stores and operations located on the island. As a result, GameStop will be exiting the Puerto Rican market by the end of March 2016. Until that time, we will continue to conduct normal business operations.

Joey Mooring | Director, Public Relations |

- analyst Jay Fonseca says this close would affect 500 employees

- Fonseca says:

“La tienda ha estado teniendo problemas vendiendo sus productos a nivel global por un tiempo. Durante el tercer trimestre del 2015  (el último periodo con data) sus ventas en productos nuevos cayeron 20 % y sus ventas de software 9 %”

Translation:

"The store has been experiencing problems selling their products globally for a while. Around the third trimester (the latest data report) their product sales fell 20% and their software sales also fell around 9%"

- GameStop would close 40 existing stores in the Puerto Rico island

I could see cutting down to say, ten stores, but a full on retreat? This may not bode well.

I bet Puerto Rican gamers will be able to find some great deals at Gamestops for a while, as they rid themselves of stock before they shut down. Stay alert, folks!

After that, you'll just have to embrace the digital future

Damn. I was a regular GameStop customer while I lived there.  Things are getting worse and worse every year.

Meh there are better stores to buy games. Still this isnt a good sign.

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

That 16% takes its toll. At least you don't have to pay extra to change soda for water on your combi.

And the increase on water and electricity bills also increased the business operation costs.
