He is a legend, the most powerful known Sorcerer in the art of console sale countery.. He lives in the enchanted forests deep beyond the valleys and mountains. It will take you 3 weeks to reach him on horse. I've heard the trek there can be very treacherous. Not many have made it back to tell the tale of the latest console numbers.

Interesting description of me haha.
But anyway. I think a lot of this has been summed up in the posts above but I just want to provide some clarity around these numbers and how we should be reading into them.
Microsoft confirmed that over 200 million active devices are now running Windows 10. This number is calculated by counting how many devices running Windows 10 have been "active" in the last 28 days. A simple switching on of a device during this period = active device.
The official statement is that over 200 million active devices are now running Windows 10. No break down is given in the official PR.
Mary Jo Foley is an analyst who has worked for over 30 years covering Microsoft and their business divisions. She heard from an unconfirmed source that of the 200 million devices there were 'around 18 million' Xbox One's.
So what does this mean in the context-
1. It is an unverified source, not an official announcement.
2. It is trusted by Mary Jo Foley who is a trusted analyst who doesn't usually report incorrect information.
3. It is the number of active Xbox One's running Windows 10.
4. Microsoft force all users to upgrade to Windows 10 when you log in to your Xbox One.
5. The official definition of this 'around 18 million' is active devices used at least once in the last 28 days.
How should this number be used?
As it's not an official number it should not be quoted as fact. Also the number talks about active consoles and not unit sales. We can not confidently say that the Xbox One has sold over 18 million but if this source is to be believed then it is likely that it is over 18 million.
Therefore the above 5 points should be kept in mind when quoting this number or using it to work out sales figures.
To date there is no official sell through or sell in number from Microsoft.
