I think one graph that would be interesting is aligned launch cumulative sales of 7th and 8th gen consoles to see how the PS4 is performing in comparison to the PS3 and the Wii U at the same point in time.

I never did cumulative weekly data, but I have catalogued weekly data from everything. It would take forever to add hundreds of weeks worth of data, so I'll just compare raw weekly data. I decided to just align them as closely as possible while keeping the years even, so since the PS4 launched in Media Create Week 8 of 2014, I aligned that week with the PS3's Week 8 of 2007 instead aligning them by first full year, that way their first full fourth quarters are aligned.

Those are great thanks!

As for cumulative if you're using Excel wouldn't this work?:

I'm not sure what kind of data you have so maybe it wouldn't be so simple for you but the formula above is pretty fast to do.

Two things I take from those graphs. The xbox brand has collapsed. It's foothole in the market is gone and all the investment gone to waste from the xbox and 360.

Secondly, aligned the ps4 is doing a lot better then the Wii U and it will push on and not look back.

Big win this gen for Sony. Last gen they were beaten by the Wii. They made up for it this time around though.

Nintendo wins this gen hands down. (your reply is home consoles only right?)

Wow everything is doing incredible! Minecraft Vita is still trucking along very well. The Ps Vita is still alive and well over there. Wii U PS4 and 3DS also all did great! Very good sales all around.

It quite contradicts to his name....... 3DS is beating the Vita in Japan more than the PS4 is on the Wii U. Soooo Yeah, I dont think that means Sony will win this gen.

Of course that's what I mean.  Isn't that obvious?  Sony has taken back the throne for home consoles and Nintendo like always remain king of dedicated handhelds.

WW though it's not even a contest for either.

Edit: and

by either I mean by your definition,  so that's 3DS vs ps4. Even Wii U + 3DS vs only ps4 won't be a contest.

Is the bar for success lying on the floor now? Beating the Wii U is not exactly a big win.

Also, in the past "a lot better" meant... well... it meant a lot better.

Look at the bigger picture.  In the end of the gen I predict the ps4 to sell about double the Wii U in Japan.  I'd categorise that as a big win myself.

I think you missed rol's Point, then again I'm also too lazy to point out the obvious.

Why bother even posting if you're too lazy to be constructive?

His point was the Wii U is at failure levels so barely besting that isn't a success.  My point is the ps4 won't barely beat the Wii U and will end up way way ahead.

If we apply that kind of bigger picture to other devices like 3DS vs. Vita, then the 3DS would be a huge win in pretty much every country in the world. Or if we keep it to Japan, we could compare anything to the performance of the Xbox One and conclude that everyone else is winning big time.

Beating a (mightily) struggling competitor shouldn't be the bar for success.

That's too black and white.  Just let me get out of the way I have to qualms with the 3DS being the undisputed king.  WW and Japan especially it definitely done respectable numbers.

Regarding the Wii U in Japan.  It's not a success but it's not a bomb.  I mean it sold 850k this year.  the ps4 sold 1.3m

I'd describe that as the Wii U not doing great but definitely a million miles from bombing.  Like the x1 sold what 20k this year?

In Japan the vita sold 1m again.  In this one region I'd describe the sales as average for a console but shit for a handheld.

So yeah Wii U doing 850k is not good or bad.  Ps4 doing 1.3m and nowhere near it's peak I'd describe as both good and promising.  Have you forgotten a year ago the experts on various forums mainly gaf said the ps4 would even cross 5m? It will cross 4m after 2016 and be around 6m at the end of 2017 with many years left on market.
