A 480p handheld in this day and age would be like a Guile flash kick to the groin. There's no way I could take Nintendo handhelds seriously if they still try to pull this off when junk smart phones are punching out a higher resolution than that.

You know Sony has made a phone that is 5.5 inch with 4k. Pretty amazing what the mobile world has become

4K support makes sense for the home console as 4K streaming services are becoming more common and 2D games could make use of the higher resolution and 720 resolution for the portable device m

Why not!? We can say that 720p/60fps is standard for Wii U because most of Wii U games works at 720p/60fps and we even have Smash Bros that running at 1080p/60fps, so they probably will go for 1080p/60fps with NX home console same they go for 720p/60fps with Wii U.

simplify their games only to reach that target (with a few exceptions such as Virtua Tennis 4 or NBA Street Homecourt).

Smash Bros isn't demanding though.

Try a game such as GTA or fallout at 1080p@60FPS. You'd need a $1000+ PC just to do that.

thinking nintendo can make all games 1080p@60FPS just because of Smash Bros is naive

No its not demanding, but again they achieved that on Wii U hardware and most of other Nintendo Wii U games work on 720p/60fsp, so with stronger hardware Nintendo will probably go for 1080p/60fps.

And there were PS2 games outputting at 1080i. What is your point exactly? The resolution is irrelevant if the image you're displaying lacks graphical fidelity. A 720p game can look a lot nicer than a 1080p game. Resolution in of itself doesn't mean squat. Perhaps Nintendo should focus on generating games that have adequate graphical fidelity by the average gamers standards (such as poly count, shader complexity, anti-aliasing), and worry less about the resolution. The resolution isn't that big of a factor in the grand scheme of things so long as the games on the next Nintendo home console has on it looks obviously better than anything on the PS3/X360/Wii U.

I already wrote whats my point, Nintendo made 720p/60fps standard with Wii U for their games, with NX they will probably make 1080p/60fps standard for their games. That doesnt mean evry Nintendo game will be 1080p/60fps same like not evre Nintendo game isnt 720p/60fps on Wii U, but of most of them yes. Games like Zelda or succesor to Xenoblade X will probably be 1080p/30Fps, while games like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, 3D Mario, Splatoon, evre 2D game...will probably be 1080p/60fps.

Why not keep the 720p/60fps and focus on making the games look better rather than increasing the resolution.  By going to 1080p you're literally doubling the amount of pixels the system has to render. With added performance, those resources could be used for all kinds of things such as higher polygon count models, more advanced shaders, better anti-aliasing etc. That would probably be a more meaningful improvement to the average consumer, as NX Home games would clearly look better than Wii U games.

You know how Nintendo is when it comes to hardware on their platforms. Sure they'll give us a good powerful console...

I you really know how Nintendo is when it comes to hardware, then you should know that they won't give us a "good powerful console". The last Nintendo consoles are only outdated hardware with a twist/gimmick to be original and different from the competition.

Because Nintendo games already look great in 720p/60fps and there is no sense to stay at same 720p/60fps with much powerful hardware, something similar to X1 power is around 4x times stronger than Wii U hardware. Staying to 720p/60fps would be make sense only if NX is small upgrade to Wii U, same like Wii is upgraded GC, but I dont think that will case with NX. Also this gen mainstream is 1080p.

Nintendo games look great... compared to what, exactly? No one looks at a Nintendo game and says "Gee that sure gives Uncharted a run for its money visually". Now I know there are different art styles in both games, but there is so much more Nintendo can do to make their games look better even with the same resolution. Why make that push unnecessarily?

Besides. I thought Nintendo wasn't competing directly with PS4 and X1 according you many people like you.

Looks great to other games too and espacily based on hardware they running. For instance some rewivers called MK8 currently best looking game of this generation. No one will say this game looks technically impressive, but they said this game looks beautiful.

Well same could say for PS4 and X1 or any new hardware. Why!? Because if you have hardware that is much powerful than previous and you can make games running at certain resolution and frame rate, you will do that.

That doesn't meant that won't or want make 1080p games when they made great looking 720p/60fps games with weak hardware.

I'd love to find out what kind of drugs those reviewers are on to call MK8 the best looking game of this generation.

On what planet does this:
http://www.technobuffalo.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Mario-Kart-8-Wii-U-Official-Screenshots-Nintendo-001.jpg

Look better than this:
http://www.gamercenteronline.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/edcc360ae15c7b3e59fb3485b9a2f69e1f6615a3_jpg__1920x1080_q85_crop_upscale.jpg?1c368f

I mean call Mario Kart 8 beautiful all you want. It's great for what it is, but a graphical marvel it is not.

---

If Nintendo still has two brain cells to smash they're trying to make a console that is cheaper than the PS4 and X1. To do that they will have to make concessions in terms of performance, especially if they're still moist over the concept of making home consoles with low power consumption. So it makes no sense to aim for the benchmarks that PS4 and X1 set. Aim a little lower than that, save some money, and give developers more resources to make better looking game rather than worrying about meeting an arbitrary resolution standard set by Nintendo.

I really wish it would be 4k...
