You don't need to invest a AAA budget into something to make it good; see Captain Toad Treasure Tracker or Splatoon. They could still have supplied Wii U with good games without investing a great deal of resources.
The issue with Mario Tennis and Amiibo Festival wasn't that they weren't AAA, it's that they were shit.
You're supposed to pull the plug on your current system once it's replaced, not a year beforehand. Having nothing new of quality to show 18 months before your next system is unacceptable.
