Forums - Sales - The PS1: The Biggest Turnaround in Console History?

i know that Sega discontinued the genesis in 1997 so it looks like you are including the 3rd party systems in there. Actually they are still selling them now technically it just depends on what qualifies as a sale.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

A great article.
One thing I wanted to mention was one of the reasons that the PS1 went from strength to strength was the rampant piracy on the console. Pretty much everyone I know had their games burnt for a few dollars and were able to play a ton of games, compared to the smaller library and expensive carts on N64.
Sony publicly stated that they were outraged at the fact their console was so easy to pirate games for but you can't deny that the fact that games were so cheap for the PS1 had a major impact on the sales figures of the console.

Really good read thanks for the info.

Did the PS1 outsell the GameCube and Xbox in 2002?

just no. to much wasted efford on this by a clickbait titel
just because you start slow and incease sales doesn't make a comeback

I remember the days around 97 and 98, I used to spend the time at my friend's frothing over with excitement to play WWF War zone on N64 only to realize later that another console called PS1 would totally trounce it wrt sales. I was not well aware of that console until Tekken 3 drew me to it like insane. The next big thing after FF VII for me.

EDIT: Worth quoting it here "Had Nintendo made the N64 a CD-based system, it's probable that they might not have lost the bulk of third-party support to Sony, and the N64 would have sold what the PS1 did and vice versa" By the time CD turned out to be a mainstream format in 97 and the onset of piracy, there was no turning back for the console at that point.

Nope. Here's the top-selling consoles in the U.S. in 2002:

PS2: 8.58M
XB: 3.18M
GC: 2.34M
PS1: 2.2M
N64: ~150k

And here's the top-selling consoles in Japan in 2002:

PS2: 3.72M
GC: 1.04M
XB: 340k
PS1: 230k

So, it had better legs in the U.S. than in Japan, but still wasn't able to beat any sixth-gen system in 2002.

Thanks for registering just to tell me this even though it's a subject that's been dealt with earlier in the thread. I reeeaaaaallly appreciate it.

So why don't you change the topic titel to something more fitting?

Even Turnaround would be better, while still not perfect.

Surprising that the Xbox was already selling more than the GameCube in 2002 considering Microsoft just entered the console business.

It was a fantastic consoe, and since I just had mine on the tail of the gen I wouldn't be able to say what game or price was decisive in Brazil, just that piracy was a great motivator for HW sales here.

Halo, man. That game was absolutely huge, and probably the most important launch title since SMB was released alongside the NES over 16 years previous. IIRC something like half of all OXboxes sold in the first six months or so had a copy of Halo attached to them. However, the Xbox was flat YoY in the U.S. in 2003, while the GC grew almost 40%, thus allowing the GC to be the overall winner that year.

By your own thread I would say FF VII was bigger than Halo 1.
