As of the latest informations we got from Nintendo in Jannuary will come the last wave of DLC for Splatoon. This means that probably ALL of the content is already ready to launch, waiting only to keep the game fresh for the holidays.

Since Splatoon is a shooter, a genre that most of Nintendo developers aren't used to work on, as well as Nintendo's development teams' habit to let do the games for a series always to the same team (of course with some exceptions) it only makes sense that the Splatoon team will work on it's sequel. Now according to the Iwata asks the game was about 10% ready at E3 2014, meaning that development took a little more than a year after they chose wat project to work on (let's say two years if we consider that they had to work on additional content after the release) . Now for Splatoon they don't have to start a game from scratch: they already have plenty of modes, concepts, established characters and enemies, and many more, but of course they'll have to be upscaled.

Now to me, taking into account all of this information the development for Spla2n will take probably 1.5/2.5 years to be made therefore I think a late 2017 release sounds plausible so that the game releases not too far but also not too close to the first entry.

The second year of the NX lifecycle, or late 2018. Splatoon is relatively small and it was developed quickly, so I can assume they will dedicate a bit more time to the next installment and release it very soon to support the sales of the NX.

It will be on the next console. Since I have ideal when it will launch, will not predict a year.

I firmly believe that the game will release once it is 40% completed, just like the first game.
