Forums - Nintendo - Back In 1990, Miyamoto's Desire Was To Make Video Games Parents Wanted Their Kids To Play

Zelda with Dinosaurs??? Maybe we will see some in Zelda U, just like how Eji teased about Link flying before the release of Skyward Sword.

Or maybe its why Yoshi was in Link's Awakening and another friendly dinosaur hasn't been seen since.

It's crazy for me to think that the dreams and visions of a man hundreds of miles away separated by ocean affected my childhood like it did, and now, I have the same dreams and visions for games.

Imagine the Impossible

"Miyamoto even jokingly suggests that Link could end up getting friendly with Yoshi"

Oh you.

Makes sense. The parents in 1990 wouldn't have been people that grew up with video games. They didn't really "get" what they were and had a lot of misconceptions I'm sure. Miyamoto needed to make games that any parent would seem dumb for saying was "bad" for their kids to be exposed to.

Those games, tricky stuff...:)

People will never understand. Nintendo will never be like Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo is aimed specially to kids. Their systems are usually the first console a kid should have (if he likes videogames obviously). And that is not a bad thing: someone has to do it and Nintendo does a great job on it.

If we loose that, kids will end up growing with COD and company. And that's pretty bad...

Yes, that's why they are so kiddy which I don't like.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

We don't have to wait for that to happen; It's already here. Unfortunalety, there are hundreds of kids who even think Nintendo is for kids. It's a shame, really.

I think Nintendo is pretty balanced in terms of catering for kids and adults- but you have to recognize that they are catering towards a pretty light hearted gamer. it's not that they're necessarily after one age brakcet or another, they're simply a game company that wants people to play their games to have fun and hang out with their friends over Mario Party or Smash

if Nintendo were exclusively aiming towards kids they wouldn't have created a lot of their franchises the way they did, into fairly difficult things. no kid under the age of like 9 is going to be able to beat Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask (well I suppose except a few exceptions) and the same can be extended to other series

something like Mario Kart or Smash Bros. definitely has a giant following from adults

whether its due to nostalgia or not, it just shows that Nintendo strategy works in the sense of they try to get people interested in their games as kids with the hope and expectation that it will flow into adulthood

I think he succeeded. Nowadays, it's normal to see parents in their 30's playing the same games as their kids. Back when I was a kid, it was unusual to see any parent playing games. They were out there but it wasn't common.
