Forums - Sony - Yoshida Shuhei: 'SOCOM 5 not happening any time soon because...'

The best we can hope for is Socom 2 ps2 classic with online support.

He's right though. zipper really fucked it up on the ps3 when they had the chance to keep it relevant. Can't believe it went from such greatness.

Good. Sony already tainted the SOCOM name enough, first paying Slant Sux to make the abysmal Confrontation, and then making Zipper CoD the hell out of SOCOM 4. I don't think Sony has the talent or vision to make a quality SOCOM title now that they have closed down Zipper, so it's best not to bother.

If they were as smart as people are saying they are, we wouldn't have had SOCOM 4. What Sony wanted was a piece of that FPS MP pie but they neglected to take into account that SOCOM was never anything like CoD or Battlefield and never would be. It's not "smart" for them to say SOCOM 5 is too risky. It's something they only realize because they killed the franchise. So if they were "smart", Confrontation and SOCOM 4 wouldn't have happened in the first place.

You don't have to be CoD or BF to be relevant. There are lots of online MP games that don't put up those numbers but still have dedicated, active fanbases.

“In an online game…you know moved on. So much of quality and production values, everything is way, way higher. People have great memories of playing these games many years ago but people’s experiences have moved on as well. So even if they say that they had a great time and they want to experience it again they may not know how much higher their own expectations have become.”

I feel that way about Halo now. I loved Halo 1-3 and after playing COD for a year or so, I decided I missed Halo too much and got an Xbox One to play the MCC. Much to my surprise, my beloved Halo felt old... very... very... old. What Yoshida is talking about literally happened to me so I know first hand that he's not blowing smoke up our asses. People have found memories about old online games but online gaming has evolved so much since then that it can be jarring to try an have that same level of fun again with an old title.

Maybe the drop in sales for Halo is another signal of how hard it has become for shooters to stand out from COD's shadow.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

It sounds like an acknowledgement that competing with CoD, Battlefield, and all the other online shooter franchises is a rather meaningless endeavor. Why budget something else for that space when you know it would need massive amounts of resources to even come close to the same level? In an already crowded market place? Not really worth it.

There are enough online shooters. Better to offer games that compliment those experiences and provide variety.

specially when those games are on PS4 and massively help push its sales anyway.

I completely agree with them. With FPS becoming so mainstream, if sony ever gonna release SOCOM 5. People would directly compare to such games like ARMA, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and probably even CS:GO. And ofc, with the nature of gamers these days, trolls and other fans of above series i that i just listed would downgrading the game.
However tho, in the department of animated/cartoonish games. The PS4 is still heavily lacking when compare to Nintendo. They should fill this gap with beloved games like Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, etc. Also, these franchise are huge, im sure it will sell.

So the solution? SOCOM 2 HD. Massively cheaper than developing a new game but satisfies the niche fanbase that still exists.

Unless Sony are saying that tastes in gaming have moved on, that's why we're releasing a first party F2P mobile game on consoles in 2015. Or why they did countless PS2 remasters last gen and have literally just gotten PS2 classics running on PS4. But nobody will want those because things have moved on, right?

The nostalgia conundrum.

Aye, to leave it alone and move forwards or to Tony Hawks 5 it.

Even a shitty, rushed, almost unplayable due to bugs version of SOCOM was bigger than anything Sony had going only six years ago. The only reason a new game would fail is because Sony has destroyed the franchise. They should admit they failed the franchise instead of trying to pass blame onto gamers, saying our expectations have changed and we wouldn't support something that's not like all the other CoD clone shooters out there.

Sad loved the ps2 and psp games

Yeah, and I think it's crippled the Xbox brand. People use to buy Xbox for FPS and now the most popular two are not only on PS4, but even have exclusive content. I don't think MS knows what to do about it either.
